1X is building humanoid robots (NEO) designed to work safely in homes, handling chores and tasks. The company has been operating since 2014 and is now scaling from prototype to mass production.
The Softgoods team designs and engineers the tactile, touch-facing components of NEO—textiles, foams, elastomers, and other soft materials that make the robot feel welcoming and safe for families. This role owns the complete lifecycle of these components from initial concept through full-scale manufacturing.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning the full design and production lifecycle of softgoods components (textiles, foams, elastomers), ensuring production quality and on-schedule delivery
- Delivering a soft-touch, welcoming tactile experience that maintains quality at scale, meeting defined feel and finish standards with low defect rates
- Ensuring all touch-facing softgoods meet safety and durability requirements; owning qualification and validation testing before launch
- Driving design-for-manufacturability and cost targets, hitting per-unit cost goals and improving first-pass yield as parts scale from prototype to mass production
- Qualifying materials and manufacturing partners for new and exotic softgoods solutions
- Owning testing and fixtures development
You will work cross-functionally with industrial designers, materials scientists, and manufacturing engineers to translate subjective goals like "soft and welcoming" into repeatable, buildable specifications.
Required Competencies:
- Deep hands-on expertise in softgoods design: textiles, foams, elastomers, including yarns, dyes, knitting, weaving, and joining techniques (cut-and-sew, bonding, lamination, molding)
- Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling, surface design, and FEA for validating structural performance, durability, and fit
- Strong design-for-manufacturing mindset; ability to translate prototypes into high-volume production while anticipating tolerance, fit, and process constraints
- Cross-functional collaboration skills; ability to work fluidly with diverse engineering and design disciplines
- Hands-on maker mentality; personal experience building, assembling, and prototyping designs with shop-floor intuition
- GD&T knowledge is a plus
Minimum Requirements:
- 5–10 years of experience (open to reviewing candidates with less who demonstrate exceptional capability)
- Bachelor of Science in engineering or related field, or equivalent professional experience
- Portfolio required, showcasing professional work, personal projects, and passion projects
Preferred traits: Pride in quality craftsmanship, creative problem-solving, comfort blending traditional methods with new technologies.
