Heron Power is building cutting-edge power electronics for grid modernization, focusing on inverters and solid-state transformers to connect large-scale renewables, storage, and loads to the grid.
You will own the complete grid interconnection lifecycle for Heron's grid-forming inverters and solid-state transformers across utility-scale PV, BESS, and large-load projects—from model development through interconnection studies, utility and ISO approval, and field commissioning. You will be Heron's technical authority with utilities, ISOs, RTOs, developers, and customers, working closely with the Controls and Systems Integration teams who own the inverter platform itself.
Key responsibilities:
- Own inverter and plant models across RMS and EMT simulation platforms (PSS/E, PSLF, PowerFactory, TSAT, PSCAD), including user-defined models, WECC generic models, and EMT models built from production controls
- Benchmark models against each other and against controller hardware-in-the-loop; produce validation reports, parameter sheets, and user guides for utilities and ISOs
- Support interconnection studies for PV, BESS, hybrid, and large-load projects
- Guide developers through the interconnection process: prepare model submittals, respond to study comments and deficiency letters, manage material modification and restudy reviews
- Carry projects through energization: define plant controller settings and coordination, write and execute commissioning and model validation test plans, analyze field data and disturbance recordings, support post-energization performance reviews
You will work in a collaborative, first-principles-driven environment with a leadership team of seasoned power conversion veterans who have designed and shipped gigawatts of products.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of power systems engineering focused on inverter-based resource (IBR) interconnection at an inverter OEM, developer, utility, ISO/RTO, or consulting firm
- Proven track record taking IBR projects from model development through interconnection approval and commissioning, owning outcomes at each step
- Hands-on proficiency in PSCAD and at least two of PSS/E, PSLF, PowerFactory, TSAT; ability to build, tune, and debug user-defined models
- Working knowledge of IEEE 2800, NERC PRC and MOD standards, FERC and ISO/RTO interconnection processes
- Strong grasp of inverter control fundamentals: grid-following and grid-forming control, current limiting, PLL dynamics, weak-grid and small-signal stability; ability to explain model behavior from first principles
NICE-TO-HAVES:
- Experience with grid-forming inverter models and requirements (VSM, droop-based controls)
- Real-code EMT model development (wrapping C or Fortran controller code as PSCAD DLL using IEEE/CIGRE interface)
- Utility-scale BESS or PV plant experience, including PPC tuning and grid-code compliance testing
