Zipline is the world's largest autonomous drone delivery service, operating on four continents and completing millions of deliveries of blood, vaccines, medical supplies, food, and retail products. The company has safely flown over 140 million commercial autonomous miles and is redefining global logistics infrastructure.
The Ground Systems team owns all ground infrastructure supporting autonomous delivery drones, including automatic docking, battery charging, thermal management, ground communication, and preflight checks. This role is central to enabling next-generation drone logistics by solving complex challenges in power distribution, power conversion, battery charging, high-performance microprocessor integration, high-speed network communication, and system-level integration.
As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will lead the design and development of high-reliability embedded systems for drone charging and docking infrastructure. You'll own the electrical design of Zipline's dock sensing and control architecture through the full production cycle: requirements, prototype, schematic capture, layout, and validation. Working with high independence, you'll shape the architecture of next-generation products, make impactful design decisions daily, and lead trade studies to understand competing priorities and burn down risk.
You'll collaborate cross-functionally with reliability, mechanical, embedded, and systems engineers across all development stages—from concept and system requirements through design, validation, production (DFM, drawings, manufacturing, EOL test, certification), and deployment (field troubleshooting, rapid mitigations, design revisions). You'll proactively identify opportunities for improvement at system and component levels, and occasionally travel to support supplier visits, product deployment, and field validation.
This is a hands-on engineering role ideal for someone who wants to push the limits of hardware in the real world and drive meaningful impact on global logistics and healthcare access.
**Requirements:**
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
- 5+ years of hands-on experience designing and testing embedded electronics hardware (microcontrollers, sensors, communication networks, etc.)
- Past success developing electronics for critical systems in energy, transportation, or medical devices
- Design experience with mixed-signal PCB, high-speed digital PCB, microprocessor, Ethernet, power electronics, and motor drive
- Design experience with MCU and digital communications (Ethernet, SPI, I2C, UART)
- Proficiency in schematic capture, PCB layout, and simulation tools (Altium, SPICE, etc.)
- Familiarity with UL, IEC, and other electrical safety standards
- Strong lab skills and familiarity with test equipment (oscilloscope, digital multimeter, power analyzer, LCR meter, function generator, spectrum analyzer, etc.)
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills across engineering disciplines
- Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
