DuckDuckGo is hiring a Senior Web Compatibility Engineer to join the Web Dependability Engineering team. You'll be responsible for ensuring websites work seamlessly across DuckDuckGo's browsers on Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android, directly improving the user experience for millions of users.
In this role, you'll own the web compatibility side of the triage process, debugging complex issues in third-party code, distinguishing between site bugs, browser bugs, and privacy protection-induced breakage. You'll lead incident response when major sites break, ship durable fixes across all platforms, and build tooling to prevent user churn. Recent team projects include reverse-engineering site detection mechanisms and building countermeasures, shimming browser APIs for cross-engine compatibility, and developing LLM agent pipelines to automatically reproduce and triage reported site breakage.
You'll work with a remote-first team of 300+ at a profitable, mission-driven company founded in 2008 with annual revenue exceeding $100m USD. The culture emphasizes trust, inclusivity, and end-to-end ownership—you'll scope, execute, and own postmortems for your projects with minimal oversight.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 7+ years of experience building and debugging complex web applications with vanilla JavaScript
- Detailed knowledge of web standards, web components, and browser APIs
- Advanced ability to reverse-engineer obfuscated third-party code and reduce issues to minimal test cases
- Passion for hunting elusive bugs and tracing them to root cause
- Interest in automating repetitive work and building agentic tooling
- Experience triaging issues, leading incident response, and communicating with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience shipping code beyond the web (native or desktop clients)
- Ability to lead complex, ambiguous projects with little to no oversight
- Bonus: experience with Swift, Kotlin, C#, C++, or Python
