Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Senior Test Planning Engineer - Assembly to lead the planning, development, and execution of test campaigns for the SPARC fusion reactor assembly program. This role is critical to accelerating project milestones by ensuring rigorous, safe, and compliant testing across all assembly phases.
You will be responsible for developing comprehensive test plans, procedures, and instructions that address complex engineering challenges including high-voltage, high-energy, and hazardous testing scenarios. Your work will span the full lifecycle: analyzing preliminary and final design reviews to identify test opportunities, developing innovative test methodologies, writing clear technical procedures, and executing troubleshooting when anomalies arise.
Key responsibilities include:
- Mastering specialized test methods (low voltage, high voltage, high stored energy, cryogenics, etc.) from both engineering and equipment operation perspectives
- Writing clean, concise technical procedures with proper version control and formatting
- Conducting project risk analysis to optimize test schedules without compromising safety or quality
- Generating pre-job briefs and procedural documentation for engineering and technician teams
- Incorporating industry safety standards (NFPA, ASME, ASTM, OSHA, NIOSH) into all test products
- Leading complex troubleshooting and causal analysis for test anomalies
- Processing team feedback post-execution to drive continuous improvement and prevent error recurrence
- Developing proficiency with SPARC Assembly workflow management software
- Ensuring strict adherence to CFS safety policies and regulatory standards
- Supporting occasional off-normal work hours for critical test activities
This position requires 5 days/week onsite presence during active assembly operations, with possible alternating shift assignments. You will work in an industrial environment with hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics. Physical demands include occasional lifting up to 50 lbs and extended periods of typing, standing, stooping, climbing, or sitting.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field
- 7+ years of equivalent engineering experience
- Previous testing experience with hazards
- Previous electrical testing experience (high voltage)
- High proficiency with MS Office, Bluebeam or Acrobat, and 3D modeling programs
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
- Ability to perform extended periods of typing, standing, stooping, climbing, or sitting
- Required onsite 5 days/week during assembly operations
