Archangel Lightworks is a laser communications company building wireless technology for satellite-to-ground data transfer. Founded in 2017 and recently closed a Series A funding round of over £10 million, the company develops optical ground stations and related products to advance critical national infrastructure security and resilience.
As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will play a critical role in the specification, design, integration, and test of optical ground stations and other products. You will work closely with internal engineering teams, external partners, and customers to ensure systems support operational needs and enable smooth integration with partner systems.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own systems or subsystems, leading specification and verification activities and serving as the primary technical point of contact for external partners
- Actively identify and address risks and issues within allocated systems
- Drive communications within product teams, producing accurate requirements, designs, models, and documents
- Plan and execute verification, qualification, and operational demonstration of designs to agreed internal and external standards
- Develop, maintain, and review system documentation including user manuals, interface control documents, operational procedures, and technical budgets
- Lead sprint planning and manage Agile workflows as needed, coordinating subsystem developments and managing technical suppliers
- Contribute to continuous improvement of systems engineering processes, including model-based systems engineering (MBSE)
- Lead significant projects and major subsystems; mentor mid-level and junior engineers
- Communicate effectively with leadership and external stakeholders
- Support deployment and operation of systems
The role is based in Oxford with hybrid flexibility as agreed with your line manager, and may involve periodic business travel.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related engineering field with strong theoretical background
- 5+ years of experience in systems engineering of comparable systems (complex communications, electro-optical, electro-mechanical, or embedded software systems)
- Demonstrable hands-on practical skills; willing and able to directly operate systems to run tests, perform operational demos, and investigate issues
- Understanding of systems engineering standards and processes (MBSE, SysML) and associated tool support (e.g., Enterprise Architect)
- Experience of the full engineering lifecycle from requirements definition through verification and validation to operations and production
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, including ability to analyze data and apply engineering judgment
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with ability to collaborate across disciplines and provide technical leadership
Desirable skills include: satellite communication systems or optical ground station experience; knowledge of standards like CCSDS, SDA, ESTOL; high data rate communications (Gbps+) and error correction protocols; precision optics and lasers; pointing and tracking algorithms; space flight systems development to ECSS standards; safety-related systems development; system security principles; control systems and Matlab/Simulink; product qualification and certification; cloud software integration and networking protocols; data visualization tools and Python.
