Anduril Industries, a defense technology company, is seeking a Senior Manufacturing Safety Engineer to join its rapidly growing Manufacturing Safety Engineering team. This role is based in Quincy, MA, and supports Anduril's manufacturing operations across multiple sites including Quonset Point, RI and Atlanta, GA. Specific team, site, and program assignments are determined during the interview process based on business need and candidate background.
The Manufacturing Safety Engineering team partners across manufacturing, engineering, and operations to ensure production systems are safe to build, test, and sustain at scale. As an engineering discipline, the team designs safety into how products are made—covering equipment, fixtures, test stations, and work instructions on the factory floor—rather than inspecting for it after the fact. The mandate spans the production lifecycle from new equipment and line design through ramp and sustained operations, applying formal risk assessment and the hierarchy of controls to identify hazards early and engineer them out.
In this role, you will be the on-the-floor technical authority who makes factories safe without slowing them down. Key responsibilities include:
• Lead formal machine and task-based risk assessments on production equipment, fixtures, tooling, and processes, documenting hazards, risk ratings, required controls, and residual risk.
• Review manufacturing work instructions and supporting training material for safety adequacy; author Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) and embed required controls, PPE, and safe-work steps.
• Engineer and review production equipment such as lift fixtures and material-handling aids in partnership with EHS, and support proof-load testing.
• Assess and design safety into production test equipment.
• Apply the hierarchy of controls and prevention-through-design principles to eliminate or reduce hazards at the equipment and line-design stage.
• Define functional-safety requirements for safety-related control systems and verify their implementation.
• Partner with EHS to ensure engineering controls satisfy applicable OSHA 29 CFR 1910 general-industry requirements (machine guarding, lockout/tagout, electrical, PPE, materials handling).
• Support incident and near-miss investigations and root-cause analysis; drive corrective engineering actions and management of change.
REQUIREMENTS:
• B.S. Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or Safety Engineering, or equivalent technical discipline
• 7+ years of experience in manufacturing/machine safety, equipment or controls engineering, or a related discipline with demonstrated ownership of risk assessments
• Hands-on experience performing formal machine and task-based risk assessments and applying the hierarchy of controls
• Working knowledge of machine safeguarding and applicable OSHA 29 CFR 1910 general-industry requirements, including machine guarding and the control of hazardous energy (lockout/tagout)
• Experience developing Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) and translating risk-assessment findings into work instructions, controls, and training
• Experience designing safety into production and/or test equipment, partnering with EHS and electrical safety specialists
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence cross-functionally on the factory floor and with engineering teams
• Eligibility to pursue and maintain a U.S. security clearance, as required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Familiarity with machine safety standards such as ISO 12100 (risk assessment and risk reduction), ISO 13849 (safety-related parts of control systems), and ANSI B11 (machine safety and safeguarding)
• M.S. Degree in an engineering discipline, or a professional safety credential (CSP, ASP) or machinery-safety credential (CMSE)
• Functional-safety experience determining Performance Level or SIL for safety-related control systems, and functional-safety certification (CMSE or TÜV FSEng)
• Experience with production test-equipment safety
• Experience in a high-rate or rapidly scaling manufacturing environment, ideally in aerospace, defense, automotive, or a comparable regulated industry
• Active U.S. security clearance
