Crusoe is a vertically integrated AI infrastructure company building the complete stack from energy generation through AI compute delivery. The Cloud Storage team is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer to architect and lead the multi-year technical strategy for Crusoe's storage infrastructure.
In this role, you will define the architectural vision for storage services that bridge high-performance NVMe hardware with globally distributed, S3-competitive object stores. You will work at the physics of the stack, identifying and integrating emerging industry trends (CXL, NVMe-oF) into a cohesive roadmap. As a technical authority, you'll serve as the final arbiter for critical architecture decisions across the Foundations organization, leading complex design reviews that intersect storage, networking, and virtualization.
Key responsibilities include: architecting and implementing solutions using industry-standard storage protocols (NFS, SMB, iSCSI, NVMe/TCP); driving open-source contributions and stewardship (Ceph, GlusterFS, Lustre, Spectrum Scale, OpenEBS); leading "tiger teams" to solve ambiguous, difficult bottlenecks from kernel-level IO context switching to global tail-latency in distributed clusters; and collaborating with executive leadership and product teams to align technical capabilities with business milestones including the path to IPO.
You will leverage system programming expertise in C, C++, Go, and/or Rust to build the foundations of the V2 storage re-architecture. This is a multiplier role where you define technical strategy, ensure architectural integrity, and drive global scalability of bespoke storage services.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 12+ years of experience building and operating large-scale, complex distributed cloud computing infrastructure products
- Deep expertise in cloud storage and distributed systems
- Strong troubleshooting and performance tuning skills; ability to profile and optimize the entire IO path
- Deep theoretical and practical knowledge of distributed state and data protection at petabyte scale
- Mastery of professional software engineering practices for the full SDLC, including coding standards, build processes, and testing
- Ability to champion and lead initiatives across the engineering organization
- Self-motivation to thrive in a fast-paced environment with high degree of ownership and minimal supervision
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS:
- Expertise in one or more public cloud offerings (AWS, GCP, Azure, OCI)
- Familiarity with AI/ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX) and MLOps
- Experience with cutting-edge I/O architectures like DAOS or SPDK
- Background in RDMA and high-performance networking, including SmartNICs and RoCEv2
- Experience with highly available and scalable systems (Cassandra, MongoDB, Redis, Kafka)
- Strong knowledge of distributed systems fundamentals (CAP Theorem, Paxos/RAFT, consistent hashing, sharding)
- Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
