OneTrust is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer to lead the Detection & Discovery team, which owns Data Discovery, Data Catalog, and AI model/agent discovery capabilities. This is a hands-on technical leadership role balancing the stewardship of mature, production-critical systems with building next-generation AI discovery features.
You will own the technical evolution of Data Discovery and Data Catalog services, leading major engineering initiatives to reduce technical debt, modernize architecture, and improve stability and reliability across the end-to-end discovery pipeline. Simultaneously, you will design and build Java services and APIs that discover AI models, agents, and cloud resources, translating provider APIs into secure, normalized inventory data.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning technical evolution and production support for Data Discovery and Data Catalog services
- Leading multi-quarter engineering-quality initiatives to reduce technical debt and modernize code and architecture
- Improving stability, reliability, performance, and operability of the discovery and catalog pipeline
- Designing and building Java services and reusable connectors for AI and cloud resource discovery
- Advancing continuous, scheduled, and incremental discovery mechanisms
- Enabling secure, multi-tenant discovery across customer accounts, projects, subscriptions, and regions
- Participating in customer-facing production-support calls and troubleshooting complex issues across Java services, Linux, Kubernetes, and cloud integrations
- Driving incidents from investigation through root cause and durable corrective action
- Setting architecture and leading technical strategy across teams; establishing high bars for code quality, design reviews, automated testing, and production readiness
- Improving observability and operational maturity using incident patterns and operational metrics
- Collaborating with Product, UX, Security, Platform, and customer-facing teams; mentoring engineers and influencing practices beyond immediate projects
The role is intentionally balanced between sustaining mature production capabilities and building the next generation of AI discovery.
**Requirements:**
- 12+ years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial hands-on development in Java and the Spring ecosystem
- Track record of designing and delivering distributed, cloud-native services and APIs used in production at enterprise scale
- Experience owning and evolving production software, including technical-debt reduction, critical issue resolution, and improvements to stability and reliability
- Hands-on experience debugging production services in Linux and Kubernetes environments
- Working knowledge of networking and connectivity troubleshooting (DNS, TLS, HTTP, proxy, firewall paths)
- Experience building integrations with external platforms (provider APIs, authentication, authorization, pagination, data mapping, evolving API behavior)
- Strong knowledge of distributed systems and workflow or event-driven architectures (failure handling, retries, idempotency, observability)
- Experience designing secure, multi-tenant SaaS systems (tenant isolation, secure service-to-service communication)
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical strategy across teams, guide architecture decisions, and deliver complex initiatives while remaining effective in code and design reviews
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience
**Preferred qualifications:**
- Experience with data discovery, data catalog, scanning, ingestion, or asset-inventory platforms
- Experience applying AI or machine learning to discovery, data, or catalog workflows
- Experience with AI platforms and infrastructure (discovery of models, agents, runtimes, tools, cloud resources)
- Hands-on experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
- Familiarity with AI governance, security, privacy, compliance, or other regulated enterprise domains
