Lambda is a leader in AI cloud infrastructure serving tens of thousands of customers, from AI researchers to enterprises and hyperscalers. Lambda has grown 10x over the last three years and is building one of the largest AI training and inference networks in the world.
As a Senior Staff Network Engineer, you will own the architecture of major areas of Lambda's network end-to-end, making design decisions and ensuring they hold up in production. You will lead large networking projects spanning multiple teams from design through build to turn-up, and drive them to completion. You'll write designs, RFCs, and code reviews that other engineers build from, and serve as the deep technical escalation point for the hardest production problems—from packet paths to routing tables to vendor firmware.
Key responsibilities include: owning the architecture of significant network areas; leading large production-scale projects across teams; writing designs and RFCs that set the bar for the team; being the escalation point for complex production issues; driving automation to replace manual operational work; partnering with hardware, platform, and product teams on cross-functional technical questions; qualifying and integrating new network hardware and software; guiding partner teams on automation and telemetry; mentoring senior and mid-level engineers; contributing to multi-year technical strategy; working with internal and external customers on network issues; and participating in day-2 operations and on-call rotation.
You will work in a hybrid model, with presence in the Bellevue or San Francisco office 4 days per week (Tuesday is the designated work-from-home day).
REQUIREMENTS:
- Owned the technical direction of a significant area of a production network; can walk through a design you made, why, what it cost, and what you'd change
- Led large production-scale networking projects across multiple teams, from design through delivery
- Expert in large network designs to achieve maximum availability and performance
- Deep expertise in data center, backbone, and internet protocols and technology
- Experience building and tuning networks for low latency, fast convergence, and high availability
- Experience with cloud provider networking (AWS, GCP, OCI)
- Comfortable on the Linux command line with understanding of the Linux networking stack and internals
- Strong automation skills (Python, Ansible, Jinja), network APIs, and git or similar source control
- Production experience with multiple network gear vendors (Arista, Juniper, Cisco, Cumulus/SONiC, Opengear)
- Raised the technical bar of engineers around you through mentorship and design review
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; leverage high-quality written artifacts to inform decision-making
NICE TO HAVE:
- Knowledge or experience maintaining Software Defined Networks (SDN)
- Experience automating network configuration
- Hands-on with HPC/AI networking: RoCEv2 and/or InfiniBand (Congestion Control, VLs, partitions), GPUDirect RDMA concepts
- Experience with DWDM technologies and SD-WAN
