Recovery.com is a late-stage, profitable startup on a mission to connect people seeking addiction and mental health treatment with providers. The company operates a consumer marketplace and provider-facing tools, serving thousands of people annually in an industry where 90% of those needing treatment don't receive it. You will be the most senior individual contributor on the engineering team, serving as a trusted technical leader who ships production code while setting architectural direction. This role bridges engineering and product, influencing how the team delivers reliable, efficient solutions for both patients and providers. Key responsibilities include: **AI Enablement:** Identify, evaluate, and implement AI tooling throughout the software development lifecycle. Drive technical architecture for generative AI capabilities, ensuring production-ready reliability, testability, and scalability. Proactively evaluate emerging AI technologies and recommend implementations that create meaningful product and engineering improvements. **Full-Stack Engineering:** Design, build, test, and ship production-ready features across React/Next.js, Node.js, and PostgreSQL. Write clean, maintainable, well-tested TypeScript. Debug complex production issues spanning multiple systems. Build and maintain search functionality using PostgreSQL and Algolia with technical SEO best practices. Participate actively in code reviews, elevating engineering standards. **Architecture & Technical Leadership:** Own and evolve system architecture across multiple domains by establishing technical standards for APIs, data models, infrastructure, deployment, scalability, and reliability. Evaluate build-versus-buy decisions and third-party integrations. Partner with engineering leadership, product, and cross-functional stakeholders to define technical strategy, reduce technical debt, mentor engineers, and deliver business outcomes. You'll play a central role in delivering a major strategic initiative this year while leading future high-impact efforts. Success means establishing yourself as the trusted technical leader, delivering complex initiatives, influencing architectural direction, measurably increasing engineering velocity and system reliability, and elevating the technical capabilities of the team. The role includes occasional travel for company gatherings and engineering planning sessions. Recovery.com values in-person collaboration and offers a flexible hybrid work policy. **Requirements:** - 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with deep hands-on experience building and shipping production applications - Demonstrated track record of flexibility, curiosity, continuous learning, and technical mastery with ability to quickly adopt emerging technologies - Deep expertise in full-stack TypeScript development - Experience with React/Next.js and Node.js preferred (equivalent modern frontend/backend technologies welcomed) - Proven experience designing and owning technical architecture for production systems, including API design, service boundaries, data modeling, scalability, reliability, and performance optimization - Experience working with relational databases, cloud infrastructure, and modern deployment platforms - Ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams through collaboration, documentation, and technical leadership rather than formal authority **Preferred qualifications:** - Experience with PostgreSQL, Algolia, AWS, GCP, Vercel, Cloudflare, or comparable modern cloud platforms - Experience building infrastructure using Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) approaches - Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and raising technical standards without direct people management - Experience building products in recovery, mental health, or highly regulated, compliance-sensitive industries with familiarity with HIPAA or similar privacy frameworks - Previous experience in early-stage or high-growth startups, building marketplace products, implementing technical SEO strategies, and leading through ambiguity with bias toward action
