1Password is seeking a Senior Staff Cloud Platform Engineer to set multi-year technical strategy for the Infrastructure Services organization, which spans Compute Services, Network and Edge Services, and Stateful Services. This is a hands-on role where you will write design documents, prototype solutions, review complex designs, and participate in incident response, but your primary impact comes from making multiple teams more effective and making decisions that compound over years.
You will partner with engineering and product leadership, security, and finance to balance reliability, security, cost, and delivery speed. You are the senior technical voice for infrastructure across the company, responsible for defining architecture and standards that every infrastructure team and internal tenant builds upon, ensuring compute, network, edge, and stateful platforms evolve as a coherent system.
Key responsibilities include: setting multi-year technical strategy and architecture for Infrastructure Services; defining patterns, standards, and guardrails across all service layers; representing Infrastructure Services in cross-organization reviews with product, security, and finance; serving as an escalation point for major incidents and driving organization-wide improvements to incident management and disaster recovery; leading cost, capacity, and efficiency strategy for the cloud footprint; driving adoption of automation and AI-assisted operations; and mentoring Staff and Senior engineers while raising the bar on design review and engineering practice.
1Password is a market-leading enterprise password manager and Unified Access Management platform trusted by over 180,000 businesses, from Fortune 100 companies to leading AI firms. The company has surpassed $400M ARR, made the Forbes Cloud 100 for four years running, and partners with iconic brands like Oracle Red Bull Racing. The engineering, product, and design teams thoughtfully integrate AI across the software development lifecycle to move faster without sacrificing quality or security.
The company is remote-first but values in-person connection; travel for annual offsites, team meetings, and industry events is expected. 1Password was founded remotely in 2005 and has deep expertise in remote culture.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Demonstrated experience setting technical direction across multiple teams, with ownership of infrastructure strategy or architecture spanning several teams or an entire organization, with measurable multi-year outcomes (adoption, shipped work, measurable improvements)
- Production-scale Kubernetes operation in multi-cluster, multi-tenant, customer-traffic-bearing environments (EKS or similar managed platforms preferred); deep knowledge including autoscaling, admission control, GitOps, workload identity, and fleet-wide cluster upgrades
- Combination of depth and breadth: working fluency in networking, edge, and stateful data systems; understanding of how decisions in one layer affect the rest
- Track record of making reliability a standard across organizations: defined SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets; improved incident response, post-incident learning, and disaster recovery across multiple teams
- Demonstrated measurable cost reduction through engineering (capacity automation, right-sizing, architecture changes, commitment strategy); experience working with finance on forecasting and tradeoffs
- Experience building security by design: driven practices such as workload identity, least-privilege IAM and RBAC, credential rotation, and strong isolation in multi-tenant environments; partnered with security teams on risk decisions and compliance
- Proficiency in Go or similar language and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform); track record of automating complex, high-toil operational workflows at fleet scale
- Ability to influence without relying on authority: clear writing of strategy and design documents, presentation to senior leaders, resolution of technical disagreements, building alignment on difficult tradeoffs
- Experience mentoring Senior and Staff engineers, raising the bar on design review, and shaping organizational hiring and technical talent evaluation
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS:
- Hands-on experience with service mesh and service-to-service networking (Linkerd, Amazon VPC Lattice)
- Experience operating scalable database technology (MySQL, Postgres, DynamoDB)
- Designing developer platform abstractions for internal teams (paved-road service toolkits, production readiness frameworks) that measurably improved usability and productivity
- Building AI-assisted operations tools (auto-remediation, AI-assisted diagnosis)
- Operating highly available, multi-region services in large SaaS environments, including capacity planning and performance optimization at scale
- Experience in security, identity, or other high-trust product environments
