Turnitin is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join its shared services team, focusing on designing and developing scalable distributed systems that power the company's award-winning educational platform. You will work primarily with Java and serverless architectures (AWS Lambda), with some frontend responsibilities using React or Web Components.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, develop, and optimize scalable shared backend services using Java and serverless technologies (AWS Lambda)
- Design and implement RESTful APIs and event-driven systems
- Contribute to frontend component development as needed
- Optimize existing services for improved performance and cost-efficiency
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Architects, Product Managers, and engineering leads across distributed locations in Europe and the USA
- Mentor and guide junior developers, fostering growth and sharing best practices
- Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines
- Ensure high-quality code through peer reviews, automated testing, and adherence to software development standards
- Create comprehensive documentation for shared components, including usage guidelines and examples

REQUIREMENTS:
Essential:
- 8+ years of backend development expertise with proficiency in Java
- Experience with serverless frameworks (AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Functions)
- Hands-on experience with frontend technologies (React, Web Components)
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, scalability, and data modeling
- Proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and collaborate with distributed teams across Europe and the USA
- Practical experience with AWS cloud technologies: Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway, SNS/SQS/EventBridge
- Extensive experience with software development best practices (design patterns, test-driven development, code profiling, debugging)
- Experience with CI/CD tools including build, deployment, and test automation
- Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical colleagues in agile environments
- Passion for mentoring and developing junior engineers
Preferred:
- Understanding or experience with AI/ML
