Karoo Health is a venture-backed startup transforming cardiovascular care through value-based care models. The company combines guideline-based medicine with digital tools to improve patient outcomes while reducing costs for health systems, payers, and provider networks. Backed by First Trust Capital Partners and BIP Ventures, Karoo is pre-Series A and building a scalable operating system for managing complex conditions across healthcare.
You will serve as a Technical Leader guiding core engineering efforts with hands-on contribution. This is a full-time role based in Pittsburgh (preferred) or fully remote within the US. You will lead a small team of software engineers while maintaining active coding responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and mentor engineers: set technical direction, unblock developers, drive continuous improvement
- Orchestrate agile processes: facilitate daily standups, sprint planning, backlog grooming, and retrospectives
- Execute: write clean, testable, maintainable code alongside the team
- Own software delivery: manage requirements through deployment and maintenance
- Architect databases: design, optimize, and maintain relational and NoSQL databases for reliability and performance
- Design cloud infrastructure: deploy scalable, secure infrastructure using infrastructure-as-code best practices
- Ensure compliance: maintain healthcare data security and regulatory compliance (HIPAA, HITRUST)
You will be a curious, pragmatic problem solver with strong empathy for technical leadership. You excel at producing simple solutions to complex problems and leading constructive technical discussions to guide teams toward optimal outcomes.
Requirements:
- Minimum 4 years leading small technical teams with direct responsibility for deliverables
- Minimum 6 years professional experience in backend or full-stack engineering, preferably in startup or fast-paced environments
- Experience with healthcare data regulations (HIPAA, HITRUST) and data formats (FHIR)
- Strong communication skills; ability to translate product requirements into technical task breakdowns
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent work experience)
- Deep understanding of cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and cloud-native development
- Proficiency with relational and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB) and API design (RESTful, GraphQL)
- Proven capability in system architecture, scalability, security best practices, and CI/CD pipelines
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; no sponsorship required now or in the future
