Airbnb's Data Infrastructure organization is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Ingestion team within the Data Movement & Transformation (DMT) group. This team builds and operates managed, multi-tenant platforms that move data out of Airbnb's online databases for offline processing, including SpinalTap (near real-time change data capture streaming to Kafka) and DBExports (periodic full-table snapshots and mutation exports). You will be hands-on across the full lifecycle—design, code, test, and operate—working with partner teams, internal customers, and leadership to deliver multi-month projects. Key responsibilities include designing and building large-scale CDC and batch export systems that run across every online database at Airbnb, helping shape the architecture of the unified data movement platform, improving reliability and performance of systems that critical business functions depend on, and making it easier for engineers across Airbnb to move data into offline systems without deep database or pipeline expertise. You will also participate in on-call rotations and help raise the operational bar for a platform that other teams build on. Teams across Airbnb depend on these systems, including payments, fraud detection, financial reporting, search, messaging, notifications, and machine learning. Reliability, performance, and scale are the core product. REQUIREMENTS: - 5+ years of experience building and operating large-scale backend distributed systems (data ingestion, streaming, CDC, storage, or data platforms) - Hands-on experience with streaming systems like Kafka and understanding of how databases capture and publish changes (binlogs, Debezium, or similar) - Ability to own and go deep in complex codebases - Experience maintaining, analyzing, and debugging production systems at scale - Track record of writing clean, readable, testable, and maintainable code - Strong collaboration and communication skills in a remote-working environment - Strong ownership and demonstrated ability to deliver on time NICE TO HAVE: - Experience building managed or multi-tenant platforms used by other engineering teams - Familiarity with MySQL/Aurora, schema evolution, or large-scale batch data processing
