Attentive is an AI marketing platform for 1:1 personalization that unifies SMS, RCS, email, and push notifications. The company serves over 8,000 customers across 70+ industries, including major brands like Crate and Barrel, Urban Outfitters, and Carter's. Attentive has been recognized by Deloitte's Fast 500 (four years running), Forbes' Cloud 100 (five years running), LinkedIn's Top Startups, and Inc.'s Best Workplaces.
The Shopper Data Platform team is the backbone of Attentive's data-driven personalization efforts, responsible for ingesting, processing, and serving millions of user data points daily. As a Senior Software Engineer on this team, you will design, build, and evolve high-scale systems that serve as the single source of truth for user profiles and power core products, advanced segmentation, personalization, and machine learning capabilities.
You will take ownership of complex technical problems across the data platform, partnering with engineering, product, data, and ML teams to deliver scalable and reliable solutions. You'll contribute to architectural decisions, drive projects from design through production, and help improve the quality, performance, and maintainability of the systems your team owns.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, build, and evolve high-scale backend systems responsible for ingestion, processing, storage, and serving of Shopper Data Platform and attributes
- Own complex engineering projects end-to-end, translating product and business requirements into scalable technical designs and driving them from implementation through successful production operation
- Develop and improve APIs, streaming pipelines, and platform capabilities that enable teams across the company to safely and efficiently build on user-profile data
- Improve the scalability, reliability, data quality, observability, and performance of systems processing large volumes of user and event data
- Partner with product, data, and ML teams to deliver user attributes and data capabilities supporting segmentation, personalization, revenue attribution, behavioral analytics, and machine learning
- Contribute to technical design and engineering standards through design reviews, thoughtful architectural decisions, mentorship, and hands-on development of technically challenging work
This is an opportunity to work on foundational infrastructure at the center of the company's mission to make user data more actionable and valuable. The ideal candidate is a backend engineer who enjoys solving complex distributed systems and data challenges, taking meaningful ownership, and helping the engineers around them do their best work.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, with experience designing and operating backend or distributed systems at scale
- Strong experience with data ingestion, processing, and streaming architectures, including systems handling large volumes of user, event, or similarly high-cardinality data
- Strong programming and software-design skills in Java or similar backend languages, with a solid understanding of distributed systems, scalability, reliability, performance, and observability
- A track record of owning complex technical projects end-to-end, from design and implementation through deployment and production operation
- Strong problem-solving and technical judgment, with the ability to evaluate tradeoffs, identify opportunities for improvement, and build pragmatic solutions that balance product needs with long-term system health
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with experience working across teams, mentoring other engineers, and contributing to technical decisions and engineering best practices
