Salary: USD 196,000 - 245,000 / annual
Discord is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Safety Experience team, responsible for building product features and systems that protect hundreds of millions of users on the platform. This role reports to the Engineering Manager of Safety Experience and is critical to Discord's growth and regulatory compliance.
You will lead the development of user-facing safety products, design and deploy robust production APIs, backend services, and data pipelines to launch safety features at scale. You'll collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, Policy, Data Science, ML, Legal, and Trust & Safety Operations to create solutions that are both impactful and user-friendly. You'll also iterate on in-house tooling to improve Trust & Safety workflows and respond rapidly to evolving abuse and compliance landscapes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading end-to-end delivery of complex safety projects
- Designing and building backend services and APIs for safety features
- Developing user-facing interfaces and tools
- Troubleshooting and debugging complex systems in production
- Using metrics and dashboards to drive data-informed decisions
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams including designers, data scientists, and policy experts
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years experience writing Python and utilizing backend API frameworks (Flask, Django)
- 5+ years experience developing front-end interfaces with JavaScript (React, TypeScript) for web and mobile platforms
- Familiarity with databases such as Cassandra, Postgres, and ScyllaDB
- Demonstrated success leading end-to-end delivery of complex projects with ability to break down ambiguity, coordinate rollouts, and align stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, debug, and test complex systems in live production environments
- Exceptional communication and collaboration skills with cross-functional partners
- Experience using metrics and dashboards to make data-driven decisions
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in Safety or Anti-Abuse domain
- Experience with Datadog or Mode for data analysis and visualization
- Familiarity with real-time streaming systems like Kafka or Pub-Sub
- Ability to contribute to offline analytics jobs and processes
- Experience building and operating mobile-client features on iOS and Android
- Exposure to lower-level languages such as Go, Rust, and Elixir
- Strong moral compass driven to protect users
