Kraken, one of the world's longest-standing crypto platforms (founded 2011, trusted by 10+ million users), is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Consumer team. The Consumer team builds applications that expose Kraken's product offerings to the mass market, with a mission to onboard the next 100 million people to crypto.
In this role, you will own the architecture and delivery of customer-facing Rust backend services powering trading, payments, and crypto experiences. You'll make design decisions on systems built to outlive individual features. Key responsibilities include:
- Taking ambiguous, multi-quarter problems from conception to shipped and measured, breaking them down so the team can move in parallel
- Owning features end-to-end (not stopping at the API/backend boundary), raising the bar on what end-to-end ownership means across customer experience, frontend impact, and product strategy
- Partnering with product leadership to shape roadmaps, bringing engineering insight that changes what gets built and owning resulting outcomes and metrics
- Driving cross-team initiatives that span Kraken's trading infrastructure, platform, and other product teams
- Mentoring mid-level engineers, reviewing designs before code exists, unblocking people quickly, and establishing patterns and standards
- Using AI extensively to amplify scope and speed—moving from manual code writing toward orchestrating AI and validating implementations, and helping the team adopt similar practices
You'll work in a culture that values shipping fast without compromising quality, with an extreme eye for detail and passion for world-class user experiences.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 6+ years of backend engineering experience with deep Rust proficiency across network services, asynchronous code, and distributed systems design (RPC protocols, Kafka, event-driven architectures)
- Track record of owning systems (not just features), making architectural decisions in production, and explaining tradeoffs
- Product engineering mindset: shipped features from problem → implementation → launch → user impact, with deep understanding of customer experience and product metrics; influenced what got built and what got cut
- Demonstrated impact through others (mentoring, design review, technical writing, or setting team standards)
- Experience driving work that spans teams or orgs, where alignment and sequencing were as critical as the code
- AI-first development approach with AI meaningfully incorporated into your workflow; actively use AI for coding, understanding unfamiliar codebases, crossing technical boundaries, and validating implementations
- Ownership mindset with collaborative spirit; personally drive features end-to-end, work across backend/frontend boundaries, operate outside technical silos
- Openness to how engineering is evolving because of AI, prioritizing shipping valuable products over manual code writing
NICE TO HAVES:
- Full-stack experience including React/TypeScript or other frontend frameworks
- Cryptocurrency or blockchain domain knowledge
- Experience building and scaling products at consumer-focused technology companies at meaningful user scale
- Experience introducing AI tooling or workflows to an engineering team
