Salary: USD 190,000 - 250,000 / annual
Skydio is the leading US autonomous drone company, serving defense, public safety, and enterprise customers. This Senior React Native Engineer role focuses on building real-time, mission-critical mobile applications for first responders, drone pilots, mission commanders, and the public.
You will lead development of cross-platform mobile experiences that deliver video, telemetry, and collaboration capabilities in high-stakes field environments. This is an architectural role with significant latitude to shape how the app is structured and to see the impact of your work directly in the field.
Key responsibilities include:
- Innovating on UI/UX for Skydio's cross-platform mobile app
- Building video and map-based experiences for diverse user personas, from trained pilots to first-time users
- Optimizing app performance through strategic use of native code (Swift/Kotlin) versus TypeScript
- Establishing foundational patterns: shared components, navigation, state management, testing strategy, CI/CD, and performance budgets
- Owning features end-to-end from prototype through customer rollout, including release management, feature flagging, and observability
- Enabling first responders to manage complex multi-drone operations
- Collaborating with autonomy and cloud teams, iterating on features based on field feedback
The role is hybrid, requiring three days per week in the San Mateo office. Relocation assistance is available.
Requirements:
- 5+ years building and shipping customer-facing mobile applications with substantial depth in React Native
- Strong expertise in React, TypeScript, and GraphQL
- Strong development skills in Swift and/or Kotlin, with real experience writing or maintaining native modules
- Proven ability to design systems that scale for performance, reliability, and usability, with diagnostic skills to troubleshoot failures
- Experience building real-time, data-intensive features and integrating with external APIs and services
- Strong product intuition and empathy for end users in high-stakes environments
- Demonstrated experience working across teams to take complex, integrated features from concept to production
- Comfort operating with ambiguity and bias toward action
- FAA Part 107 certification strongly encouraged within first 60 days; required for certain positions
Bonus qualifications:
- Experience with real-time video streaming (WebRTC, LiveKit, RTP/UDP pipelines)
- Experience with geospatial data visualization (Mapbox, Cesium)
- Experience with 3D tooling and matrix-based transformations (OpenGL, WebGL, WebGPU, Three.js)
- Exposure to autonomy, robotics platforms, or hardware communication (BLE, Wi-Fi, vendor SDKs)
- Experience with Expo and modern React Native tooling, including New Architecture (Fabric, TurboModules)
- Experience extending mobile codebases to other platforms (e.g., React Native on macOS)
- Comfort with AI-assisted development workflows
