CircleCI is reinventing CI/CD by building AI-native interfaces for developers to understand and trust their builds. The Query team owns the data platform that powers this vision—pulling product data from transactional services, storing it in high-performance analytical datastores, and serving it through domain-level APIs to product teams and customers.
In this role, you will own and harden CircleCI's ClickHouse-based storage layer, designing schemas for known and emerging access patterns while tuning ingestion and query performance at production scale. You'll design and own data ingestion pipelines from event streams and durable workflows built on Temporal, ensuring data arrives reliably without slowing critical services. You'll evolve the platform into the default path for historical queries, making it easy for teams to access what they need while maintaining visibility into usage patterns to optimize across all consumers.
You'll set technical direction on complex data problems, leading design discussions and architecture decisions. You'll champion observability using Honeycomb, Datadog, and Rollbar to drive stability through operational data. You'll move ambiguous problems from design to production quickly and help teammates move faster too. Beyond fixing immediate issues, you'll solve the underlying team practices, processes, or systems that allowed problems to occur.
CircleCI processes over 3 million jobs daily and is used by companies like Hinge, HuggingFace, and Samsung. The company is venture-backed, founded in 2011, and headquartered in San Francisco with a global remote workforce.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years building and operating production backend systems
- AI-native engineering practices: daily use of AI tools with ability to articulate what you've built, how they changed your approach, and where they fall short
- Hands-on data experience: built or owned data-intensive systems such as ingestion pipelines, event-driven architectures, or analytical/time-series datastores; understand tradeoffs between transactional and analytical storage; designed schemas and tuned queries for high-volume workloads; ClickHouse or columnar database experience is a strong plus
- Backend depth in Go: strong in Go or strong in comparable language and eager to work in Go; proficiency with interface design, data modeling, service integration, and concurrency; React and TypeScript familiarity is a plus
- Distributed systems judgment: understand delivery guarantees, idempotency, backpressure, and failure recovery; know when to rely on framework reliability guarantees
- Technical leadership: led design of complex systems, made deliberate tradeoffs, left foundations others can build on, raised quality bar through reviews, mentoring, and feedback
- Track record of shipping: work has served real users, treated latency, reliability, and correctness as design concerns
