Robinhood's Prime team is building Bitstamp's prime brokerage platform for institutional clients—hedge funds, market makers, and professional trading firms. The platform enables funding, trading, borrowing against collateral, and settlement at scale, with systems handling cross-venue settlement, credit against collateral, matched-book lending, and tokenized securities integration. These are correctness-critical systems where errors cannot be easily reversed.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will own the design and end-to-end delivery of core systems that move institutional money. You'll lead other engineers through high-ambiguity problems, set the technical bar for failure-mode thinking, and serve as a go-to technical partner for the team, stakeholders, and counterparts across Robinhood.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead design and end-to-end delivery of large, high-complexity systems (settlement, on-exchange credit, matched-book lending, cross-venue order flows) from specification through production and on-call support.
- Author detailed technical designs and break work into reviewable steps, making failure states, invariants, and recovery explicit before shipping.
- Shape the team's technical roadmap and architecture, advocating for reliability, correctness, and risk-control work that keeps client money safe.
- Uplevel the team through deep, design-focused code review and mentorship; serve as a reliable technical point of contact for partner teams and Robinhood counterparts.
The role is based in the Ljubljana office with in-person attendance expected at least 3 days per week. Participation in an on-call rotation is required to support business needs.
Requirements:
- Track record of independently delivering complex, high-ambiguity backend projects with long-term impact, operating them in production and owning every line shipped.
- Hands-on experience building financial systems (user balances, ledgers, risk engines, settlement, payments) where correctness is non-negotiable and mistakes are expensive.
- Deep expertise in distributed state across boundaries, transactional integrity, idempotency, and exactly-once semantics.
- Strong design judgment: enumerate failure paths, name invariants, and identify the constraint, test, or alert that enforces each one.
- Excellent communication skills; drive alignment across teams and product partners, give substantive design-level review feedback, and mentor engineers. Fluency in a modern backend language required—the team works primarily in Python (Django) and Go.
