Airbnb's AirCover Insurance Platform team is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to build and scale backend systems for insurance products including Host liability insurance, Experiences liability insurance, and Host damage protection. The team is expanding insurance offerings across global markets and building experimentation capabilities to measure coverage adoption.
You will own backend services and APIs for policy, coverage, enrollment, and regional rules that scale to new markets. Key responsibilities include translating regional regulatory and product requirements into configurable, reusable platform capabilities; implementing experimentation hooks, logging, and metrics for Product and Data Science teams; and partnering with cross-functional teams (Product, Design, Data Science, Legal, Engineering) to prioritize high-impact work. You will use data to identify gaps in conversion and reliability, drive improvements, and mentor engineers while championing best practices in code quality, testing, and operational excellence.
Day-to-day work involves designing, building, and operating distributed backend services in a service-oriented architecture with reliable monitoring, logging, and alerting. You will write and review code, make sound architectural trade-offs, build data pipelines and events supporting analytics and experiments, collaborate with infrastructure/security/privacy teams on data protection across regions, and participate in on-call rotations to improve system reliability.
Requirements:
- 5–9+ years of software engineering experience, ideally building and scaling backend platforms in global or multi-regional contexts
- Proficiency in backend development using Java, Kotlin, Python, Go, or similar languages
- Experience architecting high-scale services and APIs with working knowledge of relational databases and SQL
- Experience with A/B testing or experimentation systems and using data to drive product decisions
- Experience in insurance, payments, fintech, or other regulated domains is a plus
- Ability to work through ambiguity and collaborate deeply with cross-functional teams
- Excellent communication skills; ability to explain complex technical topics to technical and non-technical audiences
- BS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
