Via is building the technology backbone for modern public transportation systems worldwide. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Remix team, you'll own features end-to-end that help transit agencies design and improve public transportation networks with a focus on access, equity, and sustainability.
You'll work on planning and scheduling products used by some of the world's largest transit networks. Your responsibilities include improving these products to help planners explore new concepts and make data-driven decisions, building and scaling optimization and backend systems that run reliably in production, and collaborating across designers, data scientists, algorithm researchers, product managers, in-house transit planners, and customers. You'll work with a diverse tech stack including Python, Ruby, TypeScript, and React, selecting the right tools for different projects to deliver strong end-to-end user experiences. You'll also contribute to engineering best practices discussions and maintain processes and tools to keep productivity and code quality high.
The role involves optimization, geospatial computation, machine learning, and AI. You'll be mission-driven, user-centric, and collaborative—someone who values talking to customers and addressing their core needs.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum 5 years of professional software engineering experience
- Proven track record building and scaling computationally hard systems in production (optimization, routing, search, simulation, or geospatial processing)
- Effective use of AI tools in day-to-day engineering work
- Collaborative, humble, empathetic, and feedback-driven mindset
- Plus (not required): experience with operations research, mathematical optimization, applied machine learning, geospatial data, mapping technologies, or data visualization
