As a Senior Software Engineer on the Issue Detection team, you will design, build, and operate the systems that decide which events point to a problem, which belong together, and what developers need to know to investigate. This role combines distributed systems engineering with product engineering, where decisions about detection accuracy and processing latency directly affect which problems developers see and how quickly they can act.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building and scaling features on a product surface handling billions of events daily, where both query latency and correctness are immediately visible to users
- Owning the design and delivery of substantial projects end-to-end: scoping with product and design, making technical decisions within your scope, shipping, and instrumenting to measure impact
- Contributing to meaningful technical product decisions around grouping quality, search performance, migrations against enormous datasets, and ensuring the platform works well for both humans and AI agents
- Championing product quality and user experience by building features that delight, understanding that milliseconds matter in developer experience, and sweating details of interfaces, error messages, loading states, and edge cases
- Mentoring and elevating other engineers, helping them grow in systems design, coding practices, and product thinking
You will work on real-time processing pipelines, monitors, and analysis systems that detect problems and turn them into issues. You'll help shape how developers monitor their applications and how Sentry groups related events into issues, while building the context developers and AI agents need to investigate failures. Keeping these systems reliable and fast as Sentry scales is central to the role.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 5+ years of full-stack software engineering experience, ideally with Python and TypeScript
- Strong domain modeling skills with working experience in distributed systems, data stores, and message queues
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, or Kafka preferred
- Distributed systems expertise: understanding of eventual consistency, partitioning strategies, caching layers, query optimization, and designing for failure at scale
- Product-minded approach: ability to collaborate with Product and Design, explain technical constraints in user-centric terms, and understand that great engineering serves users
- Strong full-stack instincts with backend focus but understanding of frontend performance, API design, and user experience implications
