Coinbase is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Financing Engineering team within the Institutional group. You will design, build, and scale backend systems that safely manage billions of dollars in loans across Portfolio Margin, Trade Finance, Agency Lending, Bilateral Lending, and related products. Financing is foundational to the Prime Brokerage business, enabling customers to use leverage on trading positions and generate yield on long holdings. You will own critical backend services that drive recurring revenue, increase trading activity, and keep institutional assets on platform.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own the design and delivery of new financing products and features, from architecture through production launch, ensuring correctness and safety across high-value lending operations.
- Build and maintain backend services, APIs, and frameworks that support loan lifecycle management, risk calculations, and real-time position tracking.
- Drive engineering excellence by improving developer tooling, testing infrastructure, monitoring, and operational reliability across financing systems.
- Partner with Product, Risk, Operations, and other engineering teams to translate business requirements into scalable, well-scoped technical solutions each quarter.
- Lead technical initiatives that strengthen system resilience, reduce operational risk, and support the team's ability to ship safely at speed.
Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only company. Expect to get together quarterly for intense in-person working sessions called "surges."
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of backend software engineering experience, with production ownership of services handling high-reliability or financial workloads.
- Proven track record designing, building, and scaling service-oriented architectures in Go, Java, or a comparable backend language.
- Experience building and operating distributed systems where correctness, availability, and data integrity are critical.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, lead technical design reviews, and raise the bar on code quality across a team.
- Familiarity with relational data stores, gRPC/Protobuf, and observability tooling in a cloud-native environment.
- Ability to utilize generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
