As a Senior Software Engineer on the Infrastructure team, you'll play a key role in maintaining high reliability standards for systems that directly impact customer revenue. Our customers depend on operational systems—downtime directly translates to lost revenue for them.
You'll own infrastructure powering the entire product stack, including event ingestion, API services, alerting, invoicing, and related systems. Your responsibilities include:
• Lead infrastructure resiliency efforts: design recovery mechanisms, enforce tenant isolation, handle load spikes, and plan for failure scenarios
• Improve observability and operability across systems through better tooling, dashboards, and runbooks
• Build performance-critical, user-facing infrastructure such as real-time event processing pipelines
• Plan and execute scaling initiatives to support large customer growth
• Partner with other engineering teams to ensure reliability is built into product features from the start
• Mentor fellow engineers on infrastructure best practices, including observability, safe rollout strategies, and risk mitigation
You think deeply about edge cases, failure modes, and bottlenecks. You have a strong track record investigating and debugging complex errors and performance issues. You enjoy building scalable infrastructure for high-growth products and can effectively share expertise with peers.
Orb's tech stack includes Python and TypeScript backends, PostgreSQL and Clickhouse datastores, Kafka and Spark Streaming for event processing, and AWS for cloud infrastructure. The company values great engineers who can learn any stack, so specific tool experience is not required.
Orb operates a hybrid work culture: 3 days/week in office for San Francisco, New York, and Amsterdam residents; 1x per quarter in-person for remote roles. The company emphasizes customer centricity, speed ("minutes matter"), ownership, attention to detail, and collaborative growth.
REQUIREMENTS:
• 5+ years of software engineering experience
• 4+ years working in the infrastructure domain
• Ability to think deeply about edge cases, failure modes, and bottlenecks
• Strong debugging and performance investigation skills
• Experience building scalable infrastructure for high-growth products
• Ability to mentor fellow engineers on best practices
