Okta is seeking a Senior Software Engineer in Test to lead non-functional load testing initiatives and drive platform-level performance optimization. This is a deep engineering role—not traditional QA—focused on identifying bottlenecks, conducting in-depth performance analysis, and collaborating across engineering teams to implement solutions.
You'll work within the Performance Load Testing team, which operates on a hub-spoke model with core expertise in load generation systems, test data generation, Node.js, and Golang applications. The team partners with product and platform engineering teams across Okta to create accurate simulated load generation and data generation tests, ensuring systems maintain high performance while continuously evolving.
Key responsibilities include:
- Driving research and development to uncover platform-level efficiencies
- Conducting deep analysis to understand performance issues and root causes
- Collaborating with engineering teams to design and implement optimization solutions
- Partnering with senior load testing engineers and mentoring junior team members
- Supporting specific teams with performance load coverage, optimization, and testing
- Ensuring systems not only maintain current performance levels but continuously improve
You'll work on a global identity platform serving millions of users, where your contributions will have immediate, significant impact across the entire engineering organization. The role offers exposure to complex distributed systems, high-throughput environments, infrastructure optimization, microservices, and Kubernetes scheduling.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of deep testing experience with advanced load generation and analysis systems and tools
- Programming proficiency required in one or more of: Node.js, TypeScript, JavaScript, or Golang
- Database experience: hands-on use of MongoDB or SQL; understanding of persistence vs. performance tradeoffs; familiarity with indexes, query planners, and complex join queries
- High-level understanding of Kubernetes (K8s) and microservices architecture
- Familiarity with public cloud environments (AWS and Azure)
- Experience with observability tooling: Datadog, New Relic, OpenTracing, OpenTelemetry, or similar request tracing tools
- Load testing tool experience: JMeter, Apache Bench, Artillery, or equivalent
- Production experience with Linux and containers
- Understanding of Agentic AI tools: experience with Claude, Gemini, CoPilot; ability to implement agents, skills, workflows, and integrate them into CI/CD pipelines, Git hooks, and review processes
- Developer mindset: passion for digging into code, understanding system behavior, and proactively identifying optimization areas
