Salary: USD 180,000 - 256,000 / annual
Lila Sciences is building Scientific Superintelligence to solve major scientific challenges by combining advanced AI models with proprietary instruments into an operating system for science. You will join as Senior Software Engineer II to own critical systems across the enterprise lifecycle and developer ecosystem.
You will be responsible for building and maintaining core platform infrastructure that serves both internal scientists and external developers. This is a high-autonomy role where you own outcomes, ship regularly, and operate with technical judgment about tradeoffs.
Key areas of focus:
**Multi-Tenancy & Authorization**: Design and implement secure tenant isolation, authentication, authorization, and audit across customer organizations. Build the access boundaries and isolation guarantees required for enterprise and regulated (GxP, FedRAMP) deployments. Develop resilient backend services in Python/FastAPI, own schema design for multi-tenant data, implement tenant-aware query patterns, and ensure operational correctness in regulated environments.
**Tenant Self-Serve & Lifecycle**: Build services for tenant provisioning, self-serve administration, and customer onboarding. Support billing, pricing, and metering surfaces for enterprise customers.
**Public & Agent-Facing APIs**: Own and evolve Lila's public APIs (REST, streaming, async) designed for both human developers and autonomous agents. Ship SDKs and define tool/function interfaces that agents call.
**MCP & Agent Integration**: Build integration paths connecting MCPs, agents, and data into the platform. Enable customers to bring their own MCPs, agents, and data while ensuring proper scoping, isolation, and trust within tenants.
You will work across infrastructure, data, applications, and science teams. Internal scientists across physical and life sciences are first-class customers of the platform, so you'll build for them as directly as for external developers.
**Requirements:**
- 7+ years of backend software engineering with meaningful experience in APIs, backend services, or platform infrastructure
- Strong expertise in one or more of: API design and versioning, multi-tenancy, authentication/authorization, or backend services at scale
- Solid proficiency in Python (FastAPI), Kubernetes, AWS, and databases (SQL or document)
- Deep care for developer experience; ability to write clear errors and think about backward compatibility
- Track record of shipping working code regularly, debugging production issues, and owning systems end-to-end
- Ability to work well across teams, communicate tradeoffs clearly, and make decisions under ambiguity
**Bonus qualifications:**
- Built or maintained multi-tenant SaaS platforms with audit, compliance, or isolation requirements (SOC 2, HIPAA, GxP, FedRAMP)
- Shipped public developer platforms, APIs, or SDKs and understand what makes integrations sticky
- Familiarity with MCP, OpenAPI, or OIDC/OAuth 2.0
- Experience with tenant isolation patterns (row-level security, schema per tenant, search-path isolation)
- Experience with policy-based authorization (OPA) or externalized authz
