Tempus is seeking a Senior Software Engineer I to design, build, and scale high-quality software systems focused on data content and de-identification. This role sits at the intersection of precision medicine and advanced analytics, working on the proprietary platform that connects real-world evidence to deliver actionable insights to physicians.
You will own the design and scaling of data pipelines and event-driven services that de-identify clinical, molecular, and patient data while preserving analytic utility for precision medicine research. This is a technical leadership opportunity where you'll contribute to architecture and design decisions, improve engineering quality across the team, and collaborate across functions to deliver reliable products.
Key responsibilities include owning and delivering projects aligned with quarterly team goals; navigating ambiguity and maintaining resilience through challenges; working with leadership to set realistic, ambitious goals and break them into executable projects; supporting teammate growth through mentorship and constructive feedback; writing robust, scalable, and maintainable code; and proactively identifying and surfacing technical dependencies and blockers owned by other teams.
Success in this role means consistently delivering robust, scalable features across the stack; improving system quality through strong design, testing, and code review practices; helping the team move faster by solving recurring engineering problems; and collaborating effectively across teams to improve product quality and reliability.
The role is based in either New York or Chicago, with two offices available.

- Understanding of distributed and event-based architecture challenges
- Experience in fast-paced, agile environments with proven ability to keep projects on track, troubleshoot roadblocks, write documentation, and coordinate cross-team collaboration
- Ability to learn from and collaborate with diverse teams; experience mentoring junior team members
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with Docker, AWS, or GCP
