Salary: CAD 164,490 - 197,389 / annual
Grafana Labs is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Search & Storage squad, which is developing Grafana's next-generation storage layer. This team operates Unified Storage at scale within Grafana Cloud and manages two essential features: Search (a unified engine for finding and querying all Grafana data) and Folders (for hierarchical content management). Unified Storage is a key component of the App Platform, enabling developers to build innovative applications using a Kubernetes-inspired Operator pattern to interact with data directly.
In this role, you will take an active part in influencing the team's roadmap and your own career objectives. You'll work collaboratively to deliver new features, then use results to iterate and improve. You'll drive projects from initial ideation through to operations once they reach customers. The team embraces open-source culture and contributes to projects beyond the immediate scope.
Key responsibilities include designing, building, operating, and maintaining critical systems with ownership of reliability, performance, and availability. You'll participate in on-call rotations and take ownership of the services you're running. You'll mentor and support other team members, participate in design discussions, and collaborate across the team. You'll also deepen your understanding of Grafana's cloud product, customers, and the codebase of a large distributed system.
Grafana is a 100% remote company with team members across 40+ countries. The engineering organization is largely remote, so independence, good communication skills, and comfort with asynchronous collaboration are essential. REQUIREMENTS:
- Solid experience with Go, Rust, Python, or similar programming languages
- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience working with large distributed systems
- Experience delivering projects from gathering requirements through brainstorming to shipping products to customers in a self-driven way
- Experience developing software that runs in the cloud or systems engineering background
- Experience writing clean, robust, and performant software that is easily maintained by others
- Motivated self-starter with bias toward action
- Customer-focused mindset with passion for creating intuitive products
- Pragmatic approach to complex challenges: ability to break them down, achieve short feedback loops, design modular solutions, deliver MVPs, gather feedback, and iterate
- Strong collaboration and communication skills (essential for fully remote team environment)
BONUS:
- Experience as a user of Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles (on-call, hobby/homelab projects)
- Familiarity with on-call operations, SRE tasks, or infrastructure as code concepts
