Scribd, Inc. is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Frontend) to join the Discovery Applications team within the Machine Learning and Discovery Engineering Division. This role focuses on building customer-facing web experiences that power Scribd's search, recommendations, and generative AI features across Scribd and Everand products.
You will own frontend systems end-to-end, from design through long-term evolution, working closely with backend engineers, ML specialists, designers, and product managers. While the role is predominantly frontend-focused, you must be comfortable with the full tech stack and understand how frontend integrates with backend and ML systems. Your responsibilities include full-cycle software development, code strategy and architecture, technical design reviews, mentoring junior engineers, and participating in hiring.
Key focus areas include building intuitive user experiences powered by machine learning and generative AI, contributing to code strategy and system architecture, ensuring testability and scalability, and maintaining strong systems thinking about frontend architecture at scale. You'll work in a high-traffic, high-visibility environment and help modernize complex frontend codebases while balancing pragmatic incremental progress with ideal solutions.
The team operates in a collaborative, documentation-driven culture with occasional in-person attendance required across all Scribd locations. Scribd Flex allows employees to choose their workstyle and location while committing to intentional in-person moments for collaboration.
Requirements:
- 6+ years of professional frontend software engineering experience
- Deep experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and React
- Hands-on experience with Next.js or similar modern web frameworks
- Familiarity with microfrontend architectures, monorepos, or shared frontend platforms
- Strong understanding of web performance, bundling, and optimization techniques
- Experience collaborating with backend and platform teams to define clean integration patterns
- Comfort operating in high-traffic, high-visibility environments with real user impact
- Experience working in codebases with shared patterns and collaborating across teams
- Excellent written and verbal communication; thrives in remote, documentation-driven culture
- Highly collaborative approach to partnering with product, design, and backend teams
Nice to have:
- Experience working with or migrating large, complex, or legacy frontend codebases
- Track record of modernizing frontend systems in production
- View of frontend architecture as a product for other engineers
- First-class consideration of performance, accessibility, SEO, quality, and observability
- Investment in testing and quality practices for large-scale migrations
- Experience untangling complexity and leaving systems better than found
