Canva is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Developer Experience (DevX) group in Sydney. This role focuses on building critical infrastructure that directly impacts every engineer at Canva, with the goal of making software development faster, easier, and more enjoyable.
You will own and operate systems across three potential domains depending on team placement:
**Automation Pipeline**: Build and maintain CI/CD systems, test infrastructure, release automation, and deployment safety mechanisms that scale across the organization.
**Developer Workflows**: Optimize developer experience across the software development lifecycle, including local and remote developer environments, build system performance, IDE integrations, and AI-assisted development tooling.
**Build & Collaboration**: Maintain source control systems, monorepo tooling, build systems (Bazel), code review infrastructure, and developer environments that support thousands of engineers.
Your work will focus on high-leverage projects that eliminate systemic friction—reducing build times, automating release processes, and building self-service platforms that empower teams to move faster independently. You'll be working at scale to support a large engineering organization and will have direct impact on developer productivity across the company.

**Requirements:**
- Strong background in Platform Engineering with solid programming experience in Python and Go (Java or TypeScript experience is a plus)
- Proven track record of building and operating systems at scale
- Experience supporting large engineering organizations (1000+ engineers)
- Strong experience with AWS or GCP (company uses AWS)
- Thorough Kubernetes experience in production environments
- Experience building and maintaining complex CI/CD pipelines at scale (Jenkins, GitLab CI, Buildkite, etc.)
- Experience with Bazel, Gradle, or similar monorepo build tools (Bazel experience highly valued)
- Implemented comprehensive monitoring, logging, and alerting (observability)
- Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation)
**Highly Valued (Nice to Have):**
- Experience with release automation and deployment safety mechanisms
- Background in developer tooling
- Contributions to open source infrastructure or developer tools
- Experience integrating AI/LLM capabilities into developer workflows
- Prior work on build performance optimization or test infrastructure at scale
