Wagmo is a modern pet healthcare company that partners with employers to provide pet wellness plans, emergency coverage, and 24/7 telehealth guidance. The company uses AI to automate pet insurance claims processing, and is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to significantly expand this automation capability. In this role, you will own Wagmo's claims automation pipeline—the system that reads veterinary invoices, determines coverage eligibility, and processes reimbursements. You'll join the Pet Parents squad and take on full ownership from design through production deployment. Your primary focus will be making the pipeline cheaper to operate, easier to modify, and capable of handling claim types it currently cannot process. Key responsibilities include: - Become the core owner of the claims automation pipeline within your first few months, independently reviewing and shipping changes. - Reduce the cost of processing each claim by optimizing model routing while maintaining or improving accuracy. - Restructure the pipeline so each stage can be independently changed, tested, and deployed, with evaluations gating every rollout. - Ship new automation features that enable more claims to resolve without manual review, collaborating with Product on prioritization. - Leverage AI to extract insights from veterinary records and improve coverage decision-making across claim types. Wagmo's tech stack includes Python, Django, TypeScript, React, LLM APIs (OpenRouter), LangSmith, GitHub, Linear, Claude Code, and CodeRabbit. The role requires at least 6 hours of daily overlap with US Eastern Time. Why this role matters: Your work directly impacts real pet parents receiving reimbursements faster. AI is central to Wagmo's product, not peripheral. You'll have significant scope on a small team, owning systems that larger companies would distribute across multiple people. Requirements: - Shipped an LLM-powered feature to production that real users or real money depend on; you set up evaluations before rollout, versioned prompts and models, and planned for rollback. - Designed or substantially refactored a business-critical system (e.g., payments, claims) without breaking it, leaving it easier to change than you found it. - Taken over a complex system built by someone else and become the trusted owner; your code reviews change designs, not just style. - Made real tradeoffs between model cost and quality, with data to back up quality maintenance. - Use coding agents and AI review tools daily; they've measurably improved your shipping speed without compromising quality. - Strong Python skills; Django and TypeScript experience is a plus.
