Affirm is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Lakehouse Infrastructure team within Data and Storage Services. This team owns Affirm's data infrastructure across OLTP and OLAP systems, including online checkout databases, batch orchestration, streaming infrastructure, event-driven frameworks, BI tooling, and large-scale data platforms.
The Lakehouse Infra team's mission is to provide reliable, scalable, self-serve, and Affirm-optimized offline data access to enable ML, Product, and Financial Engineering success. The team hosts critical data infrastructure serving business-critical money and loan movement workloads across batch and analytics ecosystems.
In this role, you will own and deliver quarterly goals for your team, leading engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems while ensuring team support throughout delivery. You'll collaborate with product management, design, and analytics teams during the product development lifecycle—participating in ideation, articulating technical constraints, and partnering on decisions that balance risks and trade-offs.
You'll proactively identify and advocate for project, process, technology, and business issues, then lead in solving them. You'll support operations and availability of your team's artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting on-call efforts. You'll foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting or improving code review and design standards, advocating for them through writing and tech talks, and developing talent on your team through feedback, guidance, and leading by example.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin
- Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
- Experience scaling technologies such as Iceberg, Flink, Airflow, Spark, Kafka, Snowflake, and Terraform
- Demonstrated ability to define technical plans for significant features or system components with elegant, simple, and extensible designs
- Proficiency writing high-quality code easily understood and used by others
- Proven ability to make significant changes in large codebases and develop tools and practices enabling safe changes
- Ownership of your own growth, proactively seeking feedback from team, manager, and stakeholders
- Strong verbal and written communication skills supporting effective collaboration with global engineering teams
- Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience
