Salary: USD 243,290 - 295,250 / annual

Roblox is a platform where tens of millions of people explore, create, play, learn, and connect in 3D immersive digital experiences. The company is building tools and infrastructure to empower a global community of developers and creators. As a Senior Backend Engineer on the User Communities team, you will own the backend systems powering social engagement features including Announcements, Forums, Polls, Bug Reporting, and more for millions of players. You'll also build the control plane, permissions layer, and tools for Creators to build, grow, and moderate thriving communities on Roblox. Your day-to-day work focuses on building and scaling systems that bring players and Creators together both inside and outside experiences. On the player side, you'll create spaces where people can find and connect with community members, have conversations about experiences, discover updates, and share feedback. On the Creator side, you'll provide tools and controls for configuring custom roles, creating content, moderating discussions, and converting engagement into lasting community growth. You will shape backend engineering culture across the Communities team, with influence extending beyond your immediate pod to improve how the organization builds, reviews, and ships software. You'll act as a technical lead for cross-functional initiatives, collaborating with product, design, frontend and backend engineers. You'll take end-to-end ownership of projects from technical planning and architecture through launch, iteration, and measurable impact. You remain hands-on in the codebase, actively developing the platform and reviewing code. You'll design empowering systems that enable creators and players to engage with each other, and promote exploration and experimentation with a safety-first mindset. The role is based in San Mateo with onsite presence Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday. REQUIREMENTS: - 8+ years of backend software engineering experience with demonstrated ownership of large-scale production systems - Strong distributed systems fundamentals with experience architecting and operating large, complex systems handling high throughput - Deep proficiency in at least one server-side language (C#, Java, C++) and comfort navigating large, complex codebases - Ability to author clear technical specs, reason about trade-offs at scale, and influence teams toward correct collective architecture - Track record of broad system architecture from ambiguous requirements through production, including cross-functional coordination with product and alignment with multiple engineering teams - Strong engineering fundamentals including code quality, test coverage, observability (logging, metrics, alerting), and incident response - Desired traits: kind and generous with colleagues, product-opinionated, hands-on coder and reviewer, AI advocate, continuously growing in craft
