Roblox is a platform where tens of millions of people explore, create, play, learn, and connect in 3D immersive digital experiences. The Co-Experience team is building the social infrastructure that powers human interaction on the platform, with a focus on safety, civility, and age-appropriate communication.
As a Senior Software Engineer (Backend) on the Co-Experience team, you will own high-visibility initiatives that define the future of safe, civil social interaction. Your primary focus will be the Party System—the core social coordination layer that enables users to form groups, communicate, and stay connected as they navigate across servers and experiences.
You will collaborate with product, design, UXR, frontend, and backend engineers to strengthen backend infrastructure, build new features, and accelerate product-market fit. Your work will directly impact Roblox's global community and support top-line growth.
Key responsibilities include:
- Take end-to-end ownership of projects, from technical planning and architecture through launch, iteration, and measurable impact
- Maintain, improve, and scale the party system to support millions of concurrent users with a safety-first mindset
- Partner with other engineering teams (matchmaking, recommendations, voice, economy) to integrate systems in reusable, performant, and safe ways
- Uphold high quality standards while iterating on features with live production traffic and resolve escalations
- Raise the team's technical bar and accelerate junior engineers' productivity
- Author clear, actionable technical design documents that align stakeholders
The team values generalists who are open to learning new languages and technologies, kind and collaborative colleagues who assume good intent, product-opinionated engineers who shape roadmaps, and AI advocates who push the boundaries of AI-assisted development.
Roblox offers a hybrid work arrangement: onsite Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of experience working on microservice architectures with a proven track record in addressing scalability and reliability challenges (or 4+ years with a graduate degree in computer science or related field)
- 3+ years of experience building systems behind consumer-facing APIs that handle large numbers of concurrent users
- Strong understanding of server-side development and design principles, with proficiency in at least one compiled language (C#, C++, Java, Golang, or similar)
- Track record of leveraging AI-assisted development tools to maximize engineering velocity, navigate large codebases, and move from idea to production-ready code efficiently
- Ability to author clear, actionable technical design documents that align stakeholders and hold up in architectural review
