Salary: USD 188,000 - 242,000 / annual
Justworks is an HR and benefits platform helping businesses streamline payroll, 401(k), and HR administration. We're seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Backend to own large-scoped projects from discovery through launch, with a focus on customer impact and outcomes.
You will independently drive technical initiatives across our high-volume, fault-tolerant processing infrastructure. Key responsibilities include:
• Owning end-to-end project delivery from initial discovery through production launch
• Collaborating with cross-functional teams (product, design, operations) to solve customer challenges
• Improving performance, reliability, and scalability of existing systems
• Providing technical leadership through mentorship, knowledge-sharing, and code review
• Enhancing our testing, monitoring, and continuous deployment infrastructure
• Maintaining security and compartmentalization of sensitive financial and HR data
• Adding new capabilities to our payment and benefits processing systems

You'll be expected to mentor junior engineers, act as a force multiplier, and help establish engineering excellence across the team.
Tech stack includes Golang, Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, MySQL, Kafka, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, CircleCI, DataDog, Redis, Memcache, and ElasticSearch.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Minimum 5 years of professional hands-on backend engineering experience
• Mastery of modern server-side languages (Golang is a plus but not required)
• Proficiency with SQL and relational databases
• Proficiency with cloud infrastructure management, preferably AWS
• Demonstrated experience supporting, mentoring, and developing other engineers
• Experience collaborating closely with product managers and designers
• Strong communication, documentation, and knowledge-sharing skills
