Salary: USD 191,000 - 293,000 / annual
Tanium is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Connect team, which owns how Tanium endpoint data reaches customers' external tools and systems. Connect is a critical module that exports endpoint data and events to SIEMs (like Splunk), data warehouses, ticketing systems, cloud storage, and email. Customers run thousands of these exports on schedules, and failed or slow exports mean security teams work with stale data.
In this role, you will design and build scalable, reliable backend services in Node.js and Golang that collect, transform, and deliver large volumes of endpoint data to external destinations. You'll shape the technical direction of Connect, mentor engineers on the team, and be positioned on a path toward Staff Engineer.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and build scalable backend services handling large-volume data collection, transformation, and delivery
- Design and evolve Connect's APIs with clear contracts, versioning, and backward compatibility
- Build and maintain integrations (connectors) to third-party platforms, handling authentication, rate limits, payload formats, and failure behavior
- Own delivery guarantees: retries, backoff, deduplication, and back-pressure to prevent data loss or duplication
- Build event-driven workflows using NATS (open-source messaging) and Temporal (workflow orchestration engine)
- Lead technical design for new Connect capabilities, driving cross-team decisions and writing design documentation
- Improve observability through metrics, logs, tracing, and alerting to detect export problems proactively
- Write unit tests and partner with QA on integration and end-to-end coverage
- Debug production issues, identify root causes, and implement preventive fixes
- Mentor engineers and establish team standards for design, testing, and operations

The position is hybrid, requiring a minimum of three days per week in the office at either the Durham, NC or Emeryville, CA location. Candidates must be US-based.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; CS degree or related technical field preferred
- 8+ years building and running backend services in production, with a track record of leading designs and influencing direction beyond your own team
- Strong proficiency in Golang or Node.js, with willingness to work in both
- Experience designing APIs (REST, GraphQL, or gRPC) and building event-driven systems (NATS, Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar) and multi-step workflows
- Experience integrating with third-party APIs and SaaS products, including OAuth
- Experience with containers and cloud: Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and Azure or AWS
- Experience with SQL or NoSQL data stores, plus git and CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions)
- Proficiency with AI-assisted development tools (Claude, GitHub Copilot)
- Must be eligible to obtain FedRAMP clearance at a minimum
- Sound judgment balancing rapid development against long-term maintainability
- Believes quality is a shared responsibility and writes tests alongside code
- Experienced debugger who can handle production issues under pressure
- Comfortable mentoring others and raising team standards
NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience with NATS or Temporal (or similar workflow orchestration tools)
- Experience with SIEM or ITSM platforms (Splunk, ServiceNow) or security and endpoint data
- Experience with React, TypeScript, or building multi-tenant SaaS services
