SmartRent (NYSE: SMRT) is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join one of its multiple product teams: IoT & Hardware Integration, Frontend (Web), Frontend (Mobile), Backend Services, or Mobile & AI. The company provides an end-to-end platform for the rental housing industry, combining software, integrated hardware, and implementation support.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will play a key role in driving team success by improving engineering standards, mentoring junior engineers, refactoring legacy code, and developing new features. You will partner with product managers, designers, and QA engineers to deliver secure, scalable solutions.
General responsibilities include:
- Leading the design of vital components and features
- Writing clean, maintainable code (Elixir, React, React Native) following best practices
- Conducting code reviews and mentoring junior engineers
- Advocating for engineering standards and best practices
- Optimizing performance, refactoring legacy systems, and ensuring backward/forward compatibility
Team-specific responsibilities vary by placement:
- IoT & Hardware Integration: architect full-stack solutions for access control systems (locks, intercoms, fobs), including backend APIs, IoT integrations, and real-time hardware interactions
- Frontend (Web): design and optimize scalable React-based UI components, refactor legacy codebases, and collaborate on design systems
- Backend Services: design foundational infrastructure using Elixir for shared features (auth, event processing); develop REST/GraphQL APIs; optimize systems handling billions of IoT events
- Mobile & AI: streamline maintenance workflows via React Native apps and AI tools; develop NLP-powered search and automate task triggers
- Frontend (Mobile): develop iOS/Android apps for maintenance and resident communication; optimize offline functionality
The role is hybrid, with preference for candidates in Phoenix, AZ to report to headquarters.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field (or equivalent related work experience)
- 4–6 years of software development experience with: cloud message APIs and push notifications, Azure DevOps, Git and modern build pipelines (Webpack, Babel), CI/CD pipelines, agile methodology, and proficiency in JavaScript, AngularJS, TypeScript, Node.js, HTML, CSS, C++, C#, Python, MySQL, jQuery, web services, RESTful APIs, and modern frameworks like React or React Native
- 3 years of professional software development experience using JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and modern frameworks like React or React Native
- Strong understanding of RESTful APIs and asynchronous requests
- Familiarity with version control tools (Git) and modern build pipelines (Webpack, Babel)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with TypeScript
- Familiarity with testing frameworks for unit/integration testing (e.g., Jest)
- Knowledge of Agile development practices and tools like Jira/Confluence
