Beacon Biosignals is transforming precision medicine for the brain through at-home EEG platforms for clinical development and diagnostics. The company combines EEG and cardiopulmonary signals to deliver reimbursable assessments for sleep and central nervous system disorders.
You will join the Datastore team as a Senior Software Engineer, working on the foundational data infrastructure that sits at the heart of Beacon's platform. The Datastore serves as the centralized repository and API for brain data collected from clinical studies, supporting analytical tools, services, and applications used by scientists, clinicians, and partners.
This role emphasizes backend systems design and scaling: PostgreSQL data models, Kafka-driven event pipelines, and a GraphQL API enabling scientific and clinical data use. You will lead the design and integration of new services and components for data and event processing, own the pipelines that deliver dataset snapshots into the warehouse, and collaborate with platform and application teams to implement APIs that unlock new workflows across Beacon's expanding portfolio of clinical studies and digital health products.
Key responsibilities include partnering with product managers, scientific and clinical stakeholders, and development teams to translate requirements into new integrations and solutions; implementing features with attention to data integrity, design soundness, and maintainability; drafting RFCs to lead complex feature discovery and technical design; maintaining high standards for correctness as data moves between systems (completeness, idempotency, predictable behavior under partial failure); and leveraging feedback to improve operational robustness through documentation, tools, and dashboards.
The role is 100% remote, working anywhere in the US, with optional in-person office hubs in Boston, New York, and Paris. Beacon emphasizes robust asynchronous work practices.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of backend development experience, including at least 2 years focused on data platforms and backend infrastructure for data-centric applications (transactional systems, event pipelines, and their APIs)
- Strong proficiency in SQL with production experience in PostgreSQL; ability to write and tune queries by hand and reason about schema design, indexes, and query plans
- Hands-on experience with data streaming and event processing using Kafka or equivalent (RabbitMQ, Pulsar, Amazon Kinesis)
- Proficiency in Julia or Python (Julia experience is a strong plus but not required)
- Experience deploying and operating services in containerized environments with familiarity in Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform and/or Helm)
- Experience with GraphQL and TypeScript/JavaScript (Node.js); GraphQL is the Datastore's primary interface
- Collaborative mindset and excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially in asynchronous and remote-friendly environments
- Self-directed approach with a track record of thriving in hybrid or fully remote teams
