Teamworks is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to own performance and scalability improvements in their Athlete Management System (AMS), a Java-based platform serving elite sports and military organizations worldwide. The AMS has roughly 20 years of history and is being expanded to support significantly larger workloads.
You will work on some of the toughest backend challenges: finding and addressing performance bottlenecks across APIs, database queries, calculations, and background jobs; improving the data-access layer and evolving a legacy data model that relies heavily on XML and JSON; strengthening the queue and asynchronous processing architecture to separate resource-intensive workloads from customer-facing traffic; and improving monitoring and observability to establish performance baselines and catch issues before they affect customers.
You'll operate with high independence, turning broad performance and scalability goals into technical plans and driving them through production. You'll partner with the Data Platform team as AMS becomes an early consumer of Teamworks' evolving data capabilities, and serve as a trusted technical partner to engineering leadership by reviewing complex architectural changes, mentoring engineers, and balancing immediate scaling needs with longer-term improvements.
The role offers meaningful influence over how AMS evolves—particularly its data-access patterns, asynchronous architecture, containerization strategy, and approach to performance at scale—with direct customer impact.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 6+ years of backend engineering experience, including ownership of complex systems from design through production
- Strong Java skills and hands-on experience working with and improving established codebases
- Experience with PostgreSQL, RESTful API design, and performance optimization at scale
- Experience operating backend applications in AWS and working effectively with containerized infrastructure and infrastructure-as-code tooling
- US citizenship and US-based residency (required for access to the secure environment)
- Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation
PREFERRED:
- Experience moving monolithic applications toward containerized or service-oriented architectures
- Experience in data-intensive, high-scale, or security-sensitive environments
- Experience with Python
- Strong understanding of the JVM, including troubleshooting memory and CPU issues under load
- DevOps background and deep AWS experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field
