Zocdoc is seeking a Senior Site Reliability Engineer to enhance the observability, reliability, and safety of our distributed production systems. Our platform connects patients, providers, and numerous interconnected services and integrations, making reliability dependent on understanding the full request path across all components. In this role, you will design and build observability foundations for distributed services and integrations, including metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, alerts, SLIs, and SLOs. You'll improve end-to-end visibility across critical patient and provider workflows by identifying instrumentation gaps and making dependency health and integration failures easier to understand. You'll create reliable, repeatable tooling and infrastructure through infrastructure as code, automation, CI/CD, and self-service patterns. You'll partner closely with product engineering teams on reliability, scaling, performance, capacity, and failure-mode analysis. You'll help teams establish actionable alerts and operational ownership so on-call signals are timely and connected to clear response paths. You'll participate in the on-call rotation and incident response process, including serving as incident commander when appropriate. You'll analyze and tune systems, code, cloud resources, and networking for resilience and performance. You'll strengthen deployment and change-management practices to enable frequent releases with appropriate safeguards and rollback paths. You'll also contribute to platform standards and reusable patterns for containerized workloads, service communication, secrets, routing, and production readiness. You should be passionate about observability and believe teams can't reliably operate what they can't see. You're experienced in integration-rich environments with APIs, third-party dependencies, asynchronous workflows, and distributed services. You're excited by helping fast-moving engineering organizations ship quickly while keeping systems safe, diagnosable, and resilient. You're motivated to turn operational knowledge into reusable platforms and automation. You're comfortable leading incident response, communicating clearly under pressure, and using blameless post-mortems to drive improvements. You're curious about production system behavior and willing to investigate across application code, infrastructure, networking, and external dependencies. You're collaborative, pragmatic, and able to build trust across product teams. You're autonomous and always looking to reduce toil and improve developer and operator experience. **Requirements:** - 5+ years of experience supporting consumer-facing web applications, APIs, or distributed production environments in Site Reliability Engineering, Production Engineering, Platform Engineering, or closely related role - 2+ years of on-call experience in a 24/7 cloud-based production environment with a track record of incident response and durable remediation - Deep experience operating systems with many integrations, services, dependencies, or external APIs, and practical understanding of how those relationships affect reliability - Demonstrated experience building or improving observability practices, including metrics, structured logging, distributed tracing, dashboards, alerting, SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets - 2+ years of experience managing and supporting modern cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS, along with Docker, Kubernetes, or similar container platforms - Proficiency in Python, Go, Ruby, Java, or comparable language, with ability to read and troubleshoot application code - Experience with infrastructure as code and automated delivery practices such as Terraform, OpenTofu, CloudFormation, GitHub Actions, GitOps, or equivalent tools - Experience with edge and service networking technologies such as load balancers, reverse proxies, ingress controllers, web application firewalls, routing, rate limiting, or circuit breaking - Deep understanding of protocols and foundational networking concepts such as TCP/IP, HTTP/HTTPS, TLS, DNS, and NTP - Strong written and verbal communication skills, with ability to explain operational risk, incident findings, and technical tradeoffs to engineers and partners - Experience with sensitive data, privacy or compliance requirements, or regulated production environments is a plus but not required
