Basecamp Research is building frontier AI for therapeutic design, combining machine learning with biology to create cell and gene therapies. The company has developed EDEN models trained on BaseData, the world's largest proprietary genomic dataset with over 10 billion genes from partnerships across 30+ countries. Recently closed a $140M Series C (September 2026) led by S32 with participation from NVIDIA, Anthropic's Anthology Fund, and others. The company has offices and labs in London and Boston.
You will join the Boston team as a Senior Scientist / Associate Director in T Cell Immunology, reporting to the Head of Innovation Science. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will own the biology strategy for in vivo cell therapy programs in oncology and autoimmunity, from primary human cell assays through IND-enabling studies. You will lead from the bench, setting immunology strategy, designing studies, and executing a substantial portion of the work yourself while building a small team.
Key responsibilities include: owning T cell immunology strategy across oncology and autoimmunity programs and translating program goals into concrete assay and study plans; leading translation into in vivo models including mouse studies (humanized, syngeneic, disease models) and NHP studies for PK/PD, biodistribution, persistence, and immunogenicity in partnership with CROs; driving pharmacology and safety components of IND-enabling work including GLP/non-GLP toxicology study design, CRO oversight, biodistribution and insertional mutagenesis assessment, and authorship of regulatory sections; representing data in pre-IND and agency interactions, partner meetings, and internal governance; designing, running, and interpreting in vitro potency and specificity assays in primary human T cells including activation, proliferation, antigen-specific cytotoxicity, co-culture killing, repeat stimulation, exhaustion, cytokine release, and multiparameter flow cytometry; and mentoring scientists as programs scale.
You will work cross-functionally with gene editing, protein engineering, and AI teams to characterize novel editing enzymes in primary human T cells and define potency and specificity criteria for candidate selection.
REQUIREMENTS:
- PhD in immunology, molecular biology, bioengineering, or related life-sciences field with substantial industry experience in cell or gene therapy (typically 6+ years post-PhD for Senior Scientist level, 9+ for Associate Director level); or MSc with equivalent hands-on experience.
- Deep hands-on expertise in primary human T cell biology: isolation, activation, expansion, transfection, transduction, and functional characterization.
- Experience with gene editing in primary immune cells (nucleases, base or prime editors, transposons, recombinases/integrases, or equivalent), including measurement of editing outcomes.
- Expertise in multiparameter flow cytometry using antibody panels and fluorescent reporters, including panel design and analysis.
- Fluency with ddPCR, qPCR, NGS library preparation and QC, and interpretation of on/off-target analytics.
- Experience designing and overseeing in vivo mouse studies, including CRO management.
- Excellent communication skills with internal and external stakeholders.
ADVANTAGEOUS:
- Direct contribution to an IND or equivalent regulatory filing with first-hand knowledge of pharmacology and toxicology package.
- NHP study design and oversight, including sampling strategy and interpretation of immunogenicity and biodistribution data.
- Working knowledge of regulatory landscape for genome-edited cell and gene therapies, including off-target assessment, insertional mutagenesis, and long-term follow-up expectations.
