WeTravel is a platform that empowers travel entrepreneurs to launch and grow their own travel businesses. The company acts as the merchant of record for payment acceptance, meaning chargebacks land on WeTravel rather than trip organizers. With trips booked up to 18 months in advance, the company maintains long-term exposure to payment risk—a unique shape of risk compared to typical payments work.
You will join the Payments team (10+ engineers) as a Senior Product Engineer focused on payments risk. You'll work daily with Product, Payment Operations, and KYC/Verification teams to own the systems that decide whether organizers can sell trips, how much payout is held back, and how quickly it's released.
Key problems you'll solve:
- Assess organizers at signup and throughout their account lifecycle, ensuring holds and payout release reflect actual business strength
- Build reserves systems that track real forward obligations to suppliers per trip, replacing flat-percentage holds
- Consolidate exposure, disputes, balances, payout history, and verification state into unified dashboards, reducing decision time from hours to minutes
Day-to-day responsibilities:
- Lead projects end-to-end: discovery with cross-functional partners, solution design, implementation, rollout, and monitoring
- Shape decision-making frameworks—what to assess, what to measure, which manual steps to automate
- Balance fraud protection against legitimate organizer experience; every system you build has user-facing costs
- Own reliability of shipped systems and help raise engineering standards across the team
Tech stack: React/TypeScript frontend; Ruby on Rails and Kotlin microservices backend; Kubernetes orchestration; MongoDB, MySQL, Postgres, CockroachDB, Snowflake; major LLM providers for AI-first development.
The role offers meaningful impact: a single decision you design can be worth six figures in risk mitigation. You'll help build the operating system for multi-day group travel, empowering thousands of organizers and millions of travelers globally.
REQUIREMENTS:
Basic qualifications:
- 7+ years of product engineering expertise, with 4+ years dedicated to risk, fraud, or underwriting systems that move real money
- Deep expertise in systems that decide about money: exposure and credit models, decision and rules engines, holds, reserves, payout limits, transaction monitoring, and ledger systems
- Strong backend mastery in Ruby on Rails, Kotlin, Python, Go, Java, or Node.js with ability to ramp up on Ruby quickly
- Direct production on-call experience, including authoring post-mortems and leading incident response
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; cross-functional collaboration experience; ability to thrive in distributed, multicultural environment
- Pragmatic adoption of AI tools to optimize engineering workflow; ability to mentor others on AI concepts
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience at a merchant of record, payment facilitator, marketplace, or lender where the platform carried losses
- Experience automating underwriting or periodic review programs that previously ran on manual review

- Risk expertise limited to tuning vendor dashboards (e.g., Stripe Radar, Persona)
- Hesitant to take full ownership of mission-critical money movement or on-call participation
- Need complete data and settled requirements before committing to decisions
