Salary: CAD 170,000 - 230,000 / annual
Behavox is a cloud-native AI company providing an integrated controls platform for global financial institutions (banks, asset managers, hedge funds, private equity firms, insurance businesses, and commodity firms). The platform unifies communications and trade surveillance, compliant archiving, policy management, and front-office analytics on a single, AI-native SaaS technology stack.
You will join the Behavox AI team as a Senior NLP Engineer based in Toronto, working as an experienced individual contributor with high autonomy. The role combines NLP and AI development with data infrastructure ownership, taking solutions from prototype to production.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop AI-powered communication features and risk-detection capabilities using NLP technologies, LLMs, fine-tuning, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and embedding-based search
- Design, train, fine-tune, and evaluate NLP models for tasks including text classification, entity recognition, and relationship extraction
- Design, develop, and maintain databases and data models powering NLP pipelines; develop strategic blueprints for database deployment across the organization
- Develop and implement data administration policies, standards, and models; test data systems before and after release
- Identify infrastructure improvements through data collection and turn findings into practical changes
- Document reporting needs, queries, logic, results, and recommendations for other technical professionals
- Advise product and engineering teams; explain model behavior to clients alongside the revenue team; mentor other engineers through Git-based workflows and code review
You will work in a fast-paced, high-performance environment with tight deadlines and a strong bias toward delivery, ownership, and responsibility. The role requires attention to detail given the highly regulated financial services context. You will partner closely with research scientists, product managers, MLOps, and engineering teams.
The Toronto office operates on a hybrid basis (1 day per week in office). Behavox was founded in 2014, backed by SoftBank Vision Fund, and is headquartered in London with offices in New York City, Toronto, Montreal, Seattle, Singapore, and Tokyo.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Master's degree in computer engineering or related field (computer science, computational linguistics, machine learning)
- 5+ years of experience building NLP, data science, or machine learning systems, including production-shipped solutions
- Fluent English
- Hands-on experience with transformer models and LLMs, including fine-tuning, RAG, and embedding-based search
- Experience building evaluation datasets and metrics, working with limited and imbalanced data, and explaining model behavior to non-specialists
- Experience designing, developing, and testing databases, data models, and database management systems
- Strong Python; working knowledge of C, C++, Go, Java, and JavaScript; daily Git usage
- Experience serving, monitoring, and maintaining models and data systems in production on AWS or GCP
