The Growth Team serves as the company's powerhouse, combining programmatic, systems engineering, and commercial expertise to meet immediate customer needs and translate future requirements into product roadmaps and deliverable projects.
As a Senior Mission Concept Engineer, you will lead the definition and development of advanced space mission concepts from early customer discussions through fully developed proposals. You will play a central role in shaping missions with customers, translating their needs into technically robust and commercially viable solutions.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the design of complex missions across Earth observation, telecommunications, and technology demonstration
- Defining mission architectures across space, ground, and launch segments
- Engaging directly with institutional and commercial customers to refine requirements and shape solutions
- Leading or contributing to proposal development, ensuring technical credibility, cost realism, and customer alignment
- Supporting consortium definition and structuring partnerships across the value chain
- Contributing to early-stage mission shaping, pre-sales activities, feasibility assessments, and concept iteration
- Working cross-functionally with engineering, project management, and commercial teams to develop clear, coherent mission concepts
- Driving innovation by developing tools, models, and approaches to assess mission performance, risk, cost, and schedule
- Mentoring team members and contributing to the evolution of Open Cosmos' mission design capabilities and long-term roadmap
You will balance innovation with delivery realism, bringing together inputs from multiple teams into cohesive mission architectures.
Requirements:
- Strong understanding of all space mission phases including design, with hands-on experience defining and analyzing complex missions (e.g., constellation sizing, orbital analysis, payload integration, communications, AOCS, or system trades)
- Specialization in a mission domain such as embedded software, satellite operations, mission control systems, or flight dynamics
- Demonstrated leadership of technical workstreams or proposals in a commercial or institutional context (ESA, UKSA, EC, etc.)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including performing delta-V or power budgets and evaluating mission-level trade-offs
- Ability to deal with ambiguity and complexity using structured thinking to create clarity and drive progress
- Excellent communication and storytelling skills for both technical and non-technical audiences
- Collaborative mindset with eagerness to exchange knowledge and build scalable processes
