Muon Space, an end-to-end space systems provider founded in 2021, is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to own the mechanical direction of spacecraft subsystems from requirements definition through launch vehicle installation. You will design and deliver high-reliability hardware for LEO satellite constellations, working across the full lifecycle from concept through flight operations.
In this role, you will own end-to-end mechanical design of one or more spacecraft subsystems, including payload accommodations, primary structures, deployables, solar arrays, and precision mechanisms. You will set the design and analysis approach for complex assemblies, make and defend key engineering trade-offs with limited oversight, and lead design reviews while serving as a technical reviewer and approver for other engineers' work. You will drive integration and test of your hardware, troubleshoot issues through root cause analysis during build and qualification, and partner with structural and thermal teams on detailed analysis while coordinating across adjacent disciplines (avionics, propulsion, GNC) to maintain vehicle integration.
Beyond your own designs, you will act as a technical anchor for the broader mechanical team—mentoring earlier-career engineers, raising the team's technical bar, and influencing design standards and best practices. This is a hybrid role requiring three days per week on-site at Muon's San Jose facility.
Required Qualifications:
- 8+ years of experience designing, building, and testing high-reliability hardware
- B.S. or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
- Proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks preferred) for medium-to-large assembly design and management
- Mastery of drawings, GD&T, BOMs, FAIs, tolerance budgets, and mass budgets
- Experience with ECO/DCO processes and PLM systems
- Demonstrated proficiency leading mechanical design for complex electromechanical systems
- Extensive documentation capabilities: build procedures, test plans, design trades, DOEs
- Experience managing external vendors for part prototyping and development
- Excellent communication, presentation, and cross-functional coordination skills
Nice-to-Have Skills:
- Deep design experience in spacecraft structures, deployables/solar arrays, or precision mechanisms
- Experience owning a subsystem across its full lifecycle with flight heritage
- Fluency with first-order structural/thermal analysis
- Experience leading design reviews and defining design standards
- Hands-on background in integration, test, and anomaly resolution of flight hardware
- Familiarity with solar array or electrical/power-system design
- Experience mentoring or technically leading a small team of engineers
