Mach Industries, founded in 2023, is a rapidly growing defense technology company with ~350 employees focused on developing next-generation autonomous defense platforms. The company operates with startup agility while delivering scalable, decentralized defense systems for the United States and its allies.
You will own the mechanical design and development of mechanisms for aerospace and defense platforms, from initial concept and kinematic architecture through detailed design, prototyping, testing, and production release. This is a hands-on role combining strong mechanical fundamentals with practical experience designing, building, and troubleshooting complex moving hardware in a fast-paced development environment.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and develop mechanisms (linkages, pivots, joints, bearings, shafts, gears, cams, latches, hinges, deployable assemblies) from CAD concepts through functional prototypes and production drawings with GD&T
- Define requirements for and select actuators, motors, and drive systems to meet required profiles, torques, speeds, and positioning
- Drive manufacturability, part selection, and tolerance stack-up decisions for scalable production
- Design fixtures and tooling for manufacturing, assembly, inspection, qualification, and testing
- Perform analytical modeling and simulation (kinematics and FEA) to evaluate system performance and guide design decisions
- Work cross-functionally with mechanical, structures, avionics, controls, manufacturing, and test engineering teams to establish requirements, schedules, and interface control documents
- Support critical development and test milestones, including occasional extended hours and weekends
The ideal candidate combines strong mechanical fundamentals with demonstrated experience taking mechanisms from concept through detailed design, prototyping, functional testing, and design iteration.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or related field
- 5+ years of experience in mechanical engineering with focus on designing and prototyping moving mechanism systems
- Strong 3D CAD modeling skills (NX, SolidWorks, or equivalent) including drafting and GD&T per ASME Y14.5
- Strong understanding of mechanical design fundamentals: kinematics, force and torque transmission, bearings and joints, fits and clearances, tolerance stack-ups, and structural load paths
- Demonstrated experience taking mechanisms from concept through detailed design, prototyping, functional testing, and design iteration
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or related field
- Experience developing mechanisms for aerospace vehicles, UAVs, robotics, deployable systems, flight controls, or mass- and volume-constrained applications
- Experience analyzing mechanism kinematics, dynamic loads, friction, wear, fatigue, and tolerance sensitivity
- Experience with mechanism reliability, life-cycle testing, environmental qualification, vibration, shock, and temperature extremes
- Experience integrating mechanical mechanisms with electric, electromechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic actuation systems
- Experience designing for cross-discipline impact including aerodynamics, fluid dynamics, or thermal management
- Programming or scripting experience in Python, MATLAB, C++, or equivalent for engineering calculations, kinematic modeling, simulation, or test data analysis
