Lead Tonal's Experiences team, which owns member happiness through incremental improvements and new features that help existing subscribers get more value from the platform and retain longer. The Experiences team works across the trainer hardware, mobile app, and backend systems, partnering closely with Product, Design, Data Science, and Content.
You will manage six engineers directly, setting team direction, conducting performance reviews, providing coaching and feedback, and driving technical excellence. You own delivery of the member experience roadmap alongside Product and Design partners, ensuring predictable shipping and high quality output. You will drive technical quality across reliability, performance, test coverage, and release health—making judgment calls about when to invest in technical debt paydown versus shipping velocity.
You will partner across teams to reduce coordination overhead and accelerate feedback loops. You are responsible for hiring and growing the team, defining quality standards at each level, running calibrated performance cycles, and developing engineers who can lead. You stay close to the work: reading design docs critically, reviewing risky changes, and understanding the tradeoffs your team makes.
The role requires strong people-management experience including hiring and performance management. You should have shipped consumer-facing product experiences on mobile, embedded devices, or web, with deep understanding of what makes products feel fast and reliable to users. A strong engineering background is essential—you can read and reason about code and architecture. You communicate clearly with Product, Design, Data Science, and executives, and can negotiate commitments without overextending the team. You can hold direct, respectful conversations with underperforming team members, framed around growth opportunities. You use AI-assisted engineering tools yourself and can evaluate their output critically.
Extra credit includes experience with Android, Kotlin, Flutter, or Swift; software that ships alongside physical products; leading teams through platform or release-process modernization; background in connected fitness, consumer hardware, or digital health; or experience managing distributed or contract engineers.

- Clear communication with Product, Design, Data Science, and executives
- Ability to hold direct, respectful conversations about performance
- Proficiency with AI-assisted engineering tools and ability to evaluate their output
