ServiceNow is seeking a Senior Manager for Platform Engineering to lead a team of 6–10 engineers building and operating core cloud-native platform services. This is a player-coach role combining hands-on technical leadership with people management and strategic delivery accountability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead, hire, onboard, and develop a team of software engineers; own performance management and career growth for each team member.
- Own end-to-end delivery for the team's domain: set priorities and roadmap with product and platform leadership, make scope and sequencing trade-offs, and ensure predictable delivery from design through production.
- Establish and maintain reliability, scalability, and operability standards for services across hyperscaler, on-premises, and sovereign environments; define SLOs, on-call practices, and operational reviews; drive down incidents and toil.
- Partner with principal and distinguished engineers, peer managers, and workload teams to align the team's work with broader platform architecture, standards, and dependencies.
- Stay close to the technical work as a player-coach: review designs and code, weigh in on architectural decisions, and occasionally build to ensure technical judgment sets the bar.
- Build a healthy, high-trust engineering culture with clear expectations, honest feedback, and an inclusive environment.
- Communicate status, risks, and trade-offs crisply to leadership and stakeholders; represent the team in planning, capacity, and escalation conversations.
The role focuses on cloud platform work including Kubernetes, hyperscalers (AWS, Azure, GCP), and distributed systems. A key qualification is experience leveraging or critically thinking about how to integrate AI into engineering and platform work—whether adopting AI-powered tooling, automating operational workflows, building agentic systems for fleet operations, or reasoning about how AI changes platform team staffing and operations.
Requirements:
- 10+ years building production software, including substantial hands-on experience operating distributed systems and running workloads on Kubernetes.
- 5+ years managing software engineers, with a track record of hiring, developing, and retaining strong engineers and building high-performing teams.
- Proven track record leading teams to deliver complex, business-critical systems or services end-to-end, from design through production operation.
- Hands-on experience with at least one major hyperscaler (AWS, Azure, GCP), including core compute, networking, and IAM primitives.
- Strong working knowledge of containers, Kubernetes, CI/CD, GitOps-based delivery, and infrastructure-as-code; ability to review designs, challenge assumptions, and make sound technical trade-offs.
- Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills; ability to explain technical risks and trade-offs to both engineers and senior leadership.
- Experience leveraging or critically thinking about how to integrate AI into engineering and platform work.
